This is meant as a thread where people can ask Vanessa questions about her work.

Let's try to keep this organized and easy for Vanessa to read through, so please try to stay on topic.

anyway, I've been thinking of a couple of things, I'd like to ask Vanessa about.

1) I've always found it impressive how you manage create such great avatars for people. Have there been times where you have been really stuck trying to draw someone's avatar, or do you tend to have a pretty good idea of how to draw them when you begin?

2) You have explained how many of your characters have names that relate to a color, a flower, or something about their personality. What about Daphne Mallow? Does her name have a deeper meaning too?

that's it from me for now. I'll come up with more later, and I'm sure that there will be questions from others as well. I hope that you'll find the questions in this thread enjoyable to answer, Vanessa. Smile

I think its because of her sweet tooth Symphony. That her last name is "Mallow" like a marshmellow. That's what I think at least, but I'm sure Vanessa will answer.

Um, my question is more for your storyline than the actual artwork. I know you have your storyline, but you have allowed members to pitch in. What all can we do to help you with storyline or character creation for the background characters?

Thank you for this topic ^_^

1) I need some time to mull it over, and I always ask Martin for clarifications since some characters have quite peculiar descriptions. Since I can't redo the avatar from scratch because I have no time, I have to keep in mind everything in order not to make mistakes, and I mustn't do the mistake of copying another character that I've already done. Before coloring I show you the black and white version, so if there are problems I can do some corrections as I color it.
Fundamentally the faces come up spontaneously, what takes me the most time are the body, the posture and the clothes.
The character over which I had to reflect most was Gantros, since I had to do a mix of all the references that he gave me, I am glad he likes it! Still, I love receiving references, so don't limit yourselves! Smile

2)Yes, the mallow, a plant known as Malva in Italy, is a plant with miraculous curative powers, an infusion of mallow can soothe burns and inflammations, toothache, bellyhache...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malva
Daphne's eyes have the color of the Malva, and her books have the power to make whoever reads them feel better Wink

When I write a script I introduce always some stages of sex between the customers and the guests of the Delight Castle, I have just to decide who draw to appear in the right moment. You are the people who decide with who it would please to appear yourselves in the stages of sex and I hold it to my mind.
While about the cameos I can introduce them also to the last moment, depends if the stage allows it.
Some times I prolong the page with the stages of sex between royal members for your happiness and because fundamental this is a pornographic comic, but that slows down the main story. Ronald would want that the issues be shorter ( about 25 -30 apges for issue)... but instead I extend them always more to allow more royal members of to participate! Razz Sorry Ronald!
Oh well, the main thing is that the readers be always happy of what they see and of the entertainment every week, no? Wink

1: Eh, enough...I drew about 100 pages of Dillinger Derringer... ( still unfinished) and a lot of pinups, skecthes, paint...

2: yes, two artschool , for first Art high school ( 5 years), then Accademy of fine arts ( 4 years) and a stage in an animated study where I was a cell's painter for some Italian's cartoons. But about comics I am a self-taught Razz

It's so nice to read your answers, Vanessa. Smile

Here's another question for you:

Are there species that you find it harder or easier to draw? I'm particularly interested in what the differences between species means for you when drawing faces.

I've always been curious how much of the main story do you have preplanned out? I mean, I'm sure you know how Mary, William, Betty, etc will all do in the end, but how much of it is staged, and how much of it is on the fly?

I see you said that you allow many of the sex scenes to be made by the members, so there goes that question.

Finally, will Marco ever make an appearance in the comic, just like you, Ronald, and Martin have?

Well, I can draw easly small and big felines, canid, avians, Equines, pigs... I have not much practice with the reptiles, for this reason I don't draw dragons , and was very difficult for myself draw Henk Kobra, because I don't want to draw the reptiles with the face, like: http://jigokuko.deviantart.com/art/I-am-The-Lizard-Queen-34889277 but I like with the muzzles of reptile, and I have to learn.
Another hard work is when a character has stripes, or spotts on his fur, like a leopard, or a zebra, a tiger. ..cuz this means for me work at least 2-3 hours of more during the coloring of a page... while scars and tattoos are hard to remember XD
So I LOVE the fur of Labrn!!! So white, so easy, so wonderful!! Wink

I know I'm not an artist, not even an amateur XD, but I can see why spots and stripes are sometimes hard for an artist to draw because there's a limit of putting spots and stripes in a animal that an artists wants to put. ^^!

Ah, yes. Your fur is white, too, Mr. Ultima.

I was more aware of your red eyes more than your furs. It really stands out. :3

As for the who-has-the-whitest-fur-contest....we could dirty you and Mr. Labrn up with lots of mud, throw both of you in each washing machine with cleaning soap (or other way to clean clothes in the 1800s), dries you guys good, and we'll have three judges to see cleanliness and whiteness!

And the winners gets a.....gets a.....ummmmm....free....meal? ^^!

This question is all too bothersome to think about, but I'm pretty sure this has a simple answer in mind. What kind of method do you use when you decide pairings between the characters during certain 'encounters' in your comic? I have'nt gone too far into the background between each character and how they relate to one another, so it makes me wonder.

A contest to see who's whiter? How you gonna do that, make them dance and see who's worse at keeping rhythm? Laughing
Just joking, my honky companions...

Anyway, I do have an actual question for Vanessa: What have been your biggest influences as an artist? I'm pretty sure you've answered this or a question similar to it before, but I simply couldn't dig through all of the old threads to find it...

I have a question, Ms. Vanessa. :3

Have you ever thought about making a tutorial for people who are interested of how you draw backgrounds or any object step by step?

Say, for example, how you draw a clock or a outdoor scenery.

Hi Labrn! Your fur is very well colored in this last page 36, you will see! Wink
The main story, where I will reveal all of the secrets. ..it will be about 20 issues long , of which I already wrote the first 14, while the others are in my mind. They will be followed by other extra chapters of adventures, all more or less self-contained.

You mean that the main story of bonbon is 20 comics long and than you will stop?

But what then? You are the best female artist of all I know, I don't have at the moment a male artist, maybe the best but when you will stop who will continue then? Who will keep this alive and do you have a person/ persons in mind who could continue the world of bonbon?

You don't have the answer these questions, but I got a little worried, sorry but you are so good and I don't wanna lose you. Embarassed

Henk, I think you might have misunderstood what she said. After the main comic has ended, she has other comics planned. No need to worry about losing her.

I have a question for Vanessa: How do you find the time to do all of the art for the site that you do, and what else do you do as well? Do you have a timetable that you stick to?

Just a major question for Vanessa:

Embarassed 1. What is your stance on any character or fursona that some how changed genders or is now a Hermaphrodite? (The idea of my vision is woman with a penis and that 'she' is bi sexual or lesbian, and still pays.) The idea has been rattling in my head ever since I became part of the community here. Embarassed

2. How do you start your drawings for each character? Do you have certain guidelines that you follow?

Here's a question for Vanessa.Considering I've lived in Japan for a few years I learned that geisha do not do their own hair they either have a skilled person do it for them or they wear a wig. That being said since the pictures of Sakura show her natural hair it gets rid of the wig theory and poses the question at large:Does Sakura have somebody from Japan that does her hair?Or does somebody at the Castle know the secret and rare art of geisha hairstyling?

Actually, I might have some similar trivia about geisha culture... In the Gion and other traditional geisha districts, it is traditional for a professional "dresser", called an otokoshi, to actually assist the geisha in putting on the layers of kimonos and to tie the obi (sash) in its intricate knot. The very act of dressing a geisha is very complex, and most professionals and traditionalists rely heavily on dressers for their help. These dressers are almost always male, and have a close professional relationship with geisha and their okiya (the houses of geisha). In fact, there's almost an entire economy in these districts that surround the geisha culture: from the kimono-makers, to the hair stylists (and wig-makers, as many modern geisha use wigs), to the makers of the traditional instruments that many geisha are trained to play.

Being a well-trained and cunning kunoichi, Sakura has likely trained herself to do many of her own "costume changes" herself when need be, but perhaps relies upon a fellow shinobi to act as her otokoshi when she needs to make sure her geisha cover is 100% convincing. In fact, what better way for an undercover ninja to relay messages back and forth to her clan from the Gion than to use her "dresser" as a go-between... and a good go-between and "hench-ninja" would be as good an asset in Japan as they would be in Bon Bon. Of course, this is just an idea I had. Really, it's Vanessa's (and Martin's) character, so everything I've said probably isn't really the truth anyway...

Ah. I see. Now, is that counting any of this extra content you've done for your Royal Members, or is that why you include all the extra pages instead of moving on to the next issue?

Laughing Interesting to say the least.

Now, not to take away from your spotlight and precious free time, but I came across a comic and artist while at the Comic Con, that I figured you'd just love and find interesting called "Lackadaisy."

http://www.lackadaisycats.com/ - Comic
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lackadaisy - Wiki

The author's style, setting, and furriness just reminds me much of you. ^_^
