Well in real life the design of the Daedalus is changing daily. I was thinking that perhaps there may be room on board for a single aircraft. The runway being locatated on top of the airship, with the aircraft being stored below in a small hanger and winched up for flight.
Now if you were to come on board as a passenger for the race it may be that I or one of my crew could give you maintaince and flying lessons during the race Curious woot
Of course there would be other distractions as well but that would be up to you and your fellow passengers. Twisted Evil Embarassed

By deducting the mass of the passengers, cargo, and associated supplies that we don't need, running full out, and adding in a bit of our fantasy, we could probably argue the ship is capable. But the airship is still far faster.

Forgive me Captain but I forgot to ask, what is the passenger capacity
and crew compliment of your ship. Just so that I can adopt a similar capacity myself, adjusting the crew compliment for the needs of the air ship.

Gentlemen your race idea sounds very promising. I'd like to take part aboard the Daedalus and take some photographs from the world below during the flight (without the late 19th century equivalent of a flashlight of course, I'm not sure if they are allowed on an airship)

*chuckles* Not going for a hook and trapeze design like on the early U.S. airships? You have to admit it's a lot more compact. I'm assuming your airship is a rigid design? A non-rigid wouldn't be able to support an airstrip on top very well.

Don't give up hope just yet. Did any steamships burn oil at that time? (It would reduce tonnage if they did.) Oil also burns slightly hotter than coal, so that equates to more P.S.I. in the boilers at your disposal. Additionally, it would be possible to increase speed if you replaced the original vertical steam engines with a steam-turbine drive, which could, at this time, be in the "experimental" phase, of course.
With the right financial support ( ie: your sponsors), the conversion could be accomplished ( in terms of steam- operated equipment ) fairly quickly.

OOC: Thanks, Cole. My research didn't turn up any evidence of burning oil per sae, though I see at least one note of burning pine pitch. This was the Savannah in 1819, which seems to have been an early attempt to cross the ocean by steam power, and ran out of fuel.

The experiments with turbine drives did show they were more powerful than the piston-powered devices (although fairly later than 1895). However, like the other races, this argument was settled over an average difference of about a single knot of average speed. This is still meaningful - one note I found recorded that the Lucania beating the record of the Paris by only a knot an hour (before turbine drive) was facilitated by an estimated increase of horsepower from 20,000hp to 30,000hp!

In terms of the actual IC world, Captain Merriwether doesn't own the ship, convincing the owners to install an experimental engine just for a race might be a bit of a stretch, unless the sponsor wants to buy the ship. Smile

Taking this in to consideration the Daedalus would not be able to reach her full power and speed . A "Safe" speed would be 30 to 35 mph

That does make more of a race.. I took the figures from your estimation of a 55mph average speed and 70mph top speed. With the likely need to divert south to catch the winds, the airship would have a longer journey, but it would also have a tailwind, that might make up the difference in distance.

In truth, any possible doubt in your airship is neither its speed nor its range, but only its ability to stand up to an Atlantic storm!

If we were to take a full load then we carry nearly 1800 persons onboard - however I fear the stores of a full load will affect our ability to compete. (It's remarkable how much food a loaded steamship needs to carry across the sea!) I would expect that we will take a full crew to facilitate the return trip, about 550 men, perhaps another hundred passengers willing to pay a premium for such an event. That cuts our load to about a third what we must otherwise carry.

OOCly, I'm sort of musing about how we can play out this race as a game, maybe a little web-app we can update once a day and write out the RP based on the results that the engine gives us. I'm not sure I have time to build it, but I'm thinking a little tile-based thing with semi-random weather and ice roaming around. Sort of an automated board game, eh? Might be a fun way to play out the bet. Free time is my enemy for this idea, though we might do just as well with paper and dice!

Forgive me sir for not responding sooner, time is not my own at the moment. You would, of course be vey welcome. As to the phosphoric element of your photographic eqipment, your concern is unfounded.
There will be no hydrogen on board to ignite.
It would seem that both the good Captain Tursi and my self will be limiting our passenger lists to just 100 souls each, I do hope some of the ladies will join the adventure or the trip may be less then entertaining Laughing

You are quite correct Sir, The Daedalus is based on the Hindenburg design, though she does not use Hydrogen or Heilum as a lifting medium rather a new element discovered by my sister, who will be joining the venture and myself.

The infamous Atlantic storms are my concern too, but we shall see!
The Daedalus requires 120 persons for crew and can carry 100 passengers. The automated board game does indeed sound great fun, but free time for both of us is at a premium Crying or Very sad Still I am sure some thing can be worked out Very Happy
