Indubitably. And why wouldn't we? The quality of work is far superior to any of the dreck that the fiction genre is currently composed of.

Wow, thanks Cole! That makes me wanna pull out the stops and get started on Chapter 12 ASAP!

As much as that sounds very good to me, don't rush yourself for us, ok?

A good writer makes a great story :3.

Your welcome, Shadow. As I noted before, your work is phenomenal. But Lidia is right, "haste makes waste"....however, if inspiration strikes, do not allow the moment to elude you. Wink

Don't worry, I only said I feel eager to get started because I think I'll be hit with inspiration sooner!

Path of Darkness
By Sean J. McDowell AKA Shadow9808 / zaneskyfire

Copyright Warning: Any attempt to steal Leon Silvercross or ANY of my characters shall have me track you down, tear off your leg, kick your ass with it, freeze dry it after you bleed to death and mail it to your closest relative/friend. In the event you have no friends, I will happily dig up your parent’s bodies and bury your leg with them. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.

Chapter 12
Divided Heroes

The tall cliffs that surrounded the town of Bon Bon were covered in life threatening drops and cliffs that could easily shatter a man’s body, leaving him a broken and snapped toy at its feet, not a breath left in his lungs. Many did not climb them for that reason, but Leon was a cut above normal men and women. He was able to make do with even the smallest footholds, scaling entire cliffs in a single leap of his legs. When he at last reached the highest point he could reach, the buck stopped and gazed out at the town far below, gazing out at the trees as the winds danced in their branches, making it seem as if the trees were in a gentle waltz of their own. It was the most beautiful place in all of Bon Bon to Leon.

From this high peak, Leon was able to behold the natural beauty of nature, and bear witness to its majestic power and grace without interruption, being reminded that he too was still a primal beast at heart, at home in the wild as he was in a city. The weather had long etched a chair of stone on this peak, the rains and snow having no doubt cut the crude seat from years of pounding and abuse. It was his favorite place to come and take his mind off his life, to reflect on his past undisturbed and to behold nature’s glory. As the young man sat down on the cold stone, and set his arms on the armrests made from the wear and tear of snow, he sighed in content peace. It was a good day to come here.

Now that he was undisturbed, the young man’s memory came flooding back, recalling both his childhood, full of training and love, and more recently, his time in that forest of the doomed. He could never deny what had happened to him there at all, but even to this day, he couldn’t help but wonder what had happened to Igor while he and Zephyr tried to put an end to the core of the haunting. He hadn’t seen Igor until he had returned to his body, and the young man was understandably just happy to see his best friend was still alive and unharmed. But Igor’s relief really struck a deep cord in his heart, unable to imagine what the badger had gone through without him…

It had been only an hour since Leon had gone to bed, that Igor had spent investigating the Caver Manor’s library and records. The badger had kept his mind and body busy as he explored the manor, a stack of documents from the library clutched in his large hand, reading every time he came to a stop. Something was off about the place; Igor could just feel a lust for blood in the atmosphere, the badger’s ears turning to every creak and warping of wood in the manor. Even though he had spent the majority of his years living in a castle, Igor knew better about the properties of wood, including processed lumber. No matter how old lumber used to make a house was, it certainly did NOT creak every fifth on the clock.

He could already tell there was something dangerous, if not out right sinister about the home. From the logs the badger read, the wood was from a secluded grove far to the north. What troubled him so was according to Bill’s journals, every time they tried to cut down the mighty black trees, the tools would be warped or dulled beyond any use. It wasn’t until the crew used what nature gave them that they at last managed to gnaw down the towering brutes. What made him all the more worried was how the documents mentioned the workers ether shattering their teeth from chewing the black giants, or how they always complained of the taste of blood filling their mouths…

On pure reflex, Igor spun around to his left, just in time to see just what made him so nervous about the house; right in the middle of the hallway, he could see a massive eye taking up the ceiling, a massive maw on the floor, filled with splintered teeth! The eye, upon noticing it had been seen, had its ink black pupil shrink to emphasize the glaring red crimson of its iris as it glared hatefully at its intended prey. For a moment, all Igor could do was stare at the eye, his own deformed optical orb twitching every so often. The maw in the floor drew in breath, the rushing air sounding like water spiraling down a drain, before it issued a bellowing roar that sent the badger off his feet and down the hall!

Igor’s landing was far from dignified, but he knew his reflex to dig his massive claw into the floorboards was the only thing that kept his head inches from the matching set of jaws in the wall behind him! The papers of the documents he had been holding drifted slowly to the ground, but the badger wisely had chosen to flee from the hallway, to try and find a much more open space. “My gods Leon, you were right about this haunting! I better find him as quickly as I can!” Though scared of the fact his life was in very real danger, Igor kept his wits about him, avoiding absolute panic being among his present priorities. If this house of cursed wood was trying to kill a victim who was aware, he only dreaded what it would do to a sleeping victim…

The badger didn’t even bother to run down the stairs when he at last found them, instead leaping to the floor below, covering his head as he landed, and as soon as he rolled to one side of his hunch, sprang to his feet and kept running. The badger had a feeling Leon was already on guard on the floor above, no doubt already fighting the house. Reaching into his vest, the badger pulled out the very same piston like device he had been working on back in the carriage. From another pocket, he pulled out a small wheel that had four knife blades welded together like a star. Even as he ran, he had no trouble attaching the blade to the piston, making a piston driven saw from the two items. He constructed the device just in time, too.

As the badger started to near the basement, clawed hands seemed to spring from the walls around him, trying to trap him in a cage that would surely tear him apart! “Think your so smart, do you? Well, it’s not the one with the most hands that wins a fight!” Pulling a small cord on the piston, the small device came to life, the bladed disc slowly starting to spin where it was held, until it started to hum. As the clawed hands lash out at Igor, he swung his weapon at them, the blades cutting clean through the wooden hands, blood spraying forth from the sliced wood, a high pitched scream echoing from the walls! Once there was a gap cut open in the wooden vines, the deformed badger jumped threw, his clothes being torn and his hump scored by the claw tips.

“It’s he who uses his brain most!” Without looking back, the badger fled downstairs, the steps and walls slowly fading from wood and nails to stone and dirt. The badger slowed his pace before he came to a stop, his breath rapid as he struggled to make his lungs stop over working themselves. With a heavy sigh, the badger started to look at where he was now. If there was anything to his relief, there were oil lanterns hanging on hooks set into the walls of stone, light shining over the stone floor. The entire basement was rich with the smell of fruit, the wonderful aroma of grapes heavy in the slightly damp air. In the reflection of the light, wine bottles lined every stone rack, left to ferment with age.

Most important to him, however, was the lack of wood in the basement. If only for a while, this place could serve as a safe haven from the house that was out to murder him. Reaching into his pocket, the badger pulled out a small vial, filled with sun water. A few vigorous shakes later, the small vial extended light almost to the opposite wall of the stairway. Almost at once, he could feel his heart sink to his bowels. His thought of having escaped the house’s wooden claws was smashed apart like a window that had been struck with a brick; for the cellar’s entire ceiling was made of sturdy wood, no doubt the very floor boards overhead and their support beams.

With a hard gulp, the badger slowly walked forward towards the racks of wine, his eyes staying on the ceiling over his head. As he neared the rows of wine, the ceiling above started to creak, as the floorboards seemed to bend like water would part around a shark fin. As the lump neared the badger, a massive clawed hand lashed out on a thin branch of an arm, no doubt with the intent of causing far more than a few bleeding scratches! Igor cried out in shock as he saw he deadly appendage coming for him, his knife almost flying from his grip as his arms shot up, the sound of breaking glass echoing in the cellar, crimson fluid gushing forth as if from a stabbed heart…

An ear splitting screech forced Igor’s hands to his ears, as the wine from the bottle he had broken splashed the wooden claw. Though his right eye was clenched tight from the screaming pain in his head, the badger stared with his malformed left as the wine burned the hand like acid, the wooden appendage all but burning away like ice in the sun! As the hand fell from the branch like a rotten piece of fruit, the arm retreated away from the wine, melding back with the wood that had spawned it. As the screaming died down, the badger pulled the broken bottle, carefully, down from the rack. “Wine? Why would wine do that to wood?” As he looked the bottle over, Igor found his answer on its base.

The date, etched into the bottle’s very base, was the exact date the black wood grew! Not only that, besides the plantation’s signature seal, the badger made out a very clear cross. That only meant that the history files Igor read were true; when Bill’s grandfather finally had his house built, he received a generous donation of wine from his former town’s church, where they had their own winery for services on the days of worship. “That must be it! This wine is blessed! Not only that, but also this wine is just as old as this wood. Is that what makes it so effective?” Igor would have pondered his discovery more, had a all too familiar voice distracted him…

“What the Hell is this, Zephyr? A lake of blood?” In the dark forest, Leon had come across a giant lake of crimson fluid, the faint wind stirring waves across its surface. “No, blood’s too thick to really be affected by wind. But then what could it…” As the wooden kangaroo reached towards the lake with his wooden left hand, his metal right lashed out and grabbed his wrist. “NO! That is dangerous to your body! If it touches the bare wood or your body, you’ll erode to dust!” Leon backed away from the lake at the spirit’s warning, his short-lived panic already passing. “Great. At least it’s not in our way, though. Still, if this is so dangerous to the victims here, why is it so close to the mill?”

Igor searched the room for Leon, until his eyes fell onto the pool of wine on the floor. At once the scientist’s mind was boggled by how he could see a dead, black forest through the wine, or the wooden kangaroo with a metal lower right arm and hand, clear as if looking through a window! “Leon! Is that you in there?!” Igor’s reply caused the buck to freeze and look around him in the woods. “Igor? Don’t tell me your trapped in this woodland of the damned, too.” However, Leon’s eyes turned back to the lake, only to see Igor’s worried face reflected in it, rather than his own-mirrored image! “Igor! By the almighty forces am I glad to finally see you! Granted I would have preferred to do so in the flesh…”

Though separated by the bizarre reality of the demonic house, the two friends brought each other up to speed as to what had happened since they split up. “So Mr. Carver’s two boys are alright? Thank the heavens, he’ll be relieved to know that.” Leon’s neck creaked as he shook it side to side. “Only his younger boy, I’m afraid. I’m on my way to rescue his older son, and hopefully kill the spirit on this side. How I’m going to do that, however, is a mystery…” Igor’s face lit up as he tapped his fist into his palm. “I got it! The lake is wine, right? This, thing, reacts to this wine Mr. Carver has in his cellar like it’s sulfuric acid; its a very corrosive chemical, you see.”

Though he had no mouth to speak of on his wooden body, Leon grinned inwardly at the news. Without a word, his fingers warped again, this time into long, thin needles that he dipped into the lake of wine. Moments later, the lake started to drain a little, as the wine flowed up the sharp needles and into empty pockets inside his arm. “Igor, I have a feeling the only way we’re going to kill this thing is to strike it on two fronts. Since I’m trapped here in it’s spirit, I’ll aim for killing its soul. You gather up all the wine you can, and try to find its physical heart in the house. Maybe if we destroy its body and soul, we can end this nightmare, and get me and Bill’s boys out of here.”

Looking over his shoulder, Igor smiled. “Don’t worry, I think I have the same plan of how to do it in mind.” Behind the many shelves of wine, Igor’s eyes feel upon much of the house’s plumbing and some of the Carver family’s distillery equipment. Though split apart, both of them were aware of the risk they had to take. And yet, somewhere deep down inside them, the thrill of destroying a ghost, their first ghost as a team, excited them…

To Be Continued…
