|
|
When I returned my family home in Elgin in the Spring of 1879, the wounds and experiences I endured in Africa necessitated several months of close confinement and convalescence. Attended by my mother and my dear sister Talitha, I made a speedy recovery and by the autumn of that year I felt well enough to face the world again.
I have always held a curiousity for all things supernatural, ever since Talitha and I had sat at our uncle Alexander's feet as very young cubs and listened to his ghostly tales. These stories sent delicious chills down our spines to the very tips of our tails, much to our mothers disapproval as she had to comfort us, waking up following the nightmares they inspired.
I had heard rumors of a 'haunted house' in Forrest Road and decided that holding a vigil in such a place would both mark my return to society and test my nerves which had been so sorely tried.
I begain to make inquires and found that the premises, a large two storey terraced house with a basement, were not only available for rent but were currently un-occupied. I sought out the agent and with great reluctance on his part I obtained the keys for the property. It cost me the equivalent of a weeks rent and a promise upon my honor that I would not make public anything that may happen as the agent was having trouble enough trying to rent it out after several tenents had left citing unexplainable noises and encounters for their departure.
A few days later, in the late afternoon I stood before the front door of the house the keys in one paw and along with my sword cane, a cloth containing a bulls eye lanturn, sandwiches and two bottles of ginger beer in the other.
Upon entering the building I was immediately stuck by the smell of dust and neglect. The house was unfurnished, for which I was greatful it meant that I would not mistake a chair or some such for an apparition.
The entrance hall was was quite large and enough light streamed through the door and windows for me to make out much of the details within. Doors lead off to other rooms on the left and right of the hall, with the staircase directly in front of me going up to the landing above.
Placing my cane and bundle upon the stairs. I untied it and removed the lanturn, lighting it with a lucifer. I locked the front door and with sword cane unsheathed, procceded to search the house from top to bottom and room to room. It would not do to have some homeless person or other intruder come upon me later in the night.
My search came to naught inregard to the bedrooms and groundfloor rooms, but upon reaching the kitchen I found myself shaking with fear.
I was drawn to the basement door, placing my paw on the round handle I turned it and threw the door open, sword at the ready.
I made my down the flight of twelve steps sweeping the light from my lanturn in to every knook and cranie, but it revealed nothing except the damp bare walls. Reaching the bottom of the stairs I shone my light around again in prelude to returning to the kitchen. As I turned and placed a foot on the first step, my heart froze for I could hear the distinct sound of footsteps walking across the floor above and towards the open door.
I tried to call out to the intruder but I could not utter a sound as the footsteps came to a halt. Then gathering all my strength I found my voice and issued a challenge.
" YOU UP THERE SHOW YOUR SELF YOU COWARD!"
There was no reply nor did my unexpected guest present themselves.
Sword in paw I slowly made my way back up the steps ready to defend myself. But as I reach the kitchen I found it quite empty, the stone flags making it impossible for any one to have left the room without me hearing them, unless they had removed their shoes. That was made impractical by the speed I had used in coming up from the basement.
Returning to the hall I checked the front door was still locked and with a final search of the ground floor, settled down upon the staircase convinced that I had mistaken the settling of the house for something more sinister.
The growling of my stomach promped me to unwrapping my
sandwiches. The heavenly taste of cold roast beef and horse-radish took my mind off the incident, the two bottles of ginger beer washing the meal down to my great satisfaction.
I sat upon the stairs for some hours in the dark without further incident, sword in paw and occasionally using the lantern to glance a my pocket watch.
I had just done so, noting it was almost quarter past the hour of eleven, when a thunderous knocking came upon the front door.
I almost leapt out of my fur at the intrusion, however I was determined to confront this intruder be it living or spirit.
Unlocking and opening the front door I was taken aback. Standing in front of me in my lantern's light was a police constable! The large and somewhat portly badger in turn shone his own lantern on me.
" May I inquire what you are doing here Sir?" He growled, his black eyes gleamed beneath his pointed helmet.
I quickly explained myself, the constable nodding gravely. When I concluded my story, the badger gave a small grunt.
" Be that as it may Sir. I am afraid that I cannie leave you in this house without the proper authority. You will have to go home."
I returned to the stair case and sheathed my blade directly. The constable had followed me inside and stood close by as I gathered my things.
" By the way constable what made you come calling to the house?"
I inquired.
A puzzled look came on his face. " Why Sir, your friend called and beckoned to me as I walked past on my beat. From a window upstairs."
Now it was my turn to be puzzled. " Friend? I assure you constable I am quite alone here!"
" Then who is that standing on the landing above?" He replied.
I looked up and clearly stood there was a figure. I was not able to discern any detail only that it seemed to be male and perhaps canid.
In a instant both the constable and I brought our lanterns to bear on it.
As we did so the figure melted away into nothing. With unseemly haste both of us made our way out of the house. Locking the door behind us, we marched quickly away.
I hope you enjoy this offering as much as I did writing it. _________________ Terminus: http://forums.pleasurebonbon.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=239198#239198

I have to ask you this... When you say Elgin are you talking about the one in Illinois, the one in Arizona, or would you rather not say? |

My apologies for the omission Sir,
I was refering to the town of Elgin on the North-East coast of Scotland.
Beautiful countryside and wonderful fishing. _________________ Terminus: http://forums.pleasurebonbon.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=239198#239198

Ah well that is my mistake, I forgot to include the possibility of other countries having cities of that name. |
