Oh yes, professional cake warfare needs a lot of training  like calculating the right flight path according to the kind of cake you wish to throw....
On the other hand you can just grab a huge amount of cakes and throw them, at least one of them will hit your target *g*

Just have my handkercheif cleaned with the rest of your clothes and return it. That will be thanks enough.

Training, eh? That's just simple physics. You just need to take into account the mass of the cake, its size and therefore the air resistance, the distance between yourself and your target, and not forgetting gravity. That will help you work out the right angle and strength to throw it.
Or, as you say, just chuck a large amount and leave it to luck. Personally, I'm more used to throwing pies than cakes.
