I was rereading the comics and something suddenly came to me, what if Edelweiss was Mary's mother? Based on this hypothesis a lot of plot points became clearer. First, it would explain Simon Blue's dislike of BonBon in general, seeing as Edelweiss chose the Delight Castle (and by extension, the entire town) over him.
Second, it would explain why Edelweiss was banished from BonBon due to Betty and Mary's friendship. Betty's close association with Edelweiss made the truth of Mary's mother dangerously close to be revealed to Mary, and Simon likely was going to banish Betty when Edelweiss intervened for the sake of Mary's happiness, going in her place.
Finally, Betty herself is probably unaware of this connection, although some of the older residents of BonBon (those who lived there prior to Mary's birth), are forbidden under BonBon's Law to even acknowledge the relationship Edelweiss had with Simon and Mary.
This is all theory based on my observations. This is not canon information. _________________ Most have only two choices in life, a life of happiness, or a life of meaning. It is truly a rare thing when one can achieve both. But given the choice, I choose happiness. |

You are not the first one to come to this hypothesis, and I'm sure you will not be the last. This was discussed for some time quite some time ago. If you like, I can hunt down the conversation for you, so you may see for yourself where it went. _________________ Silentium est aurum |

If Edelweiss is Mary's mother, then that could certainly lead to a very happy resolution of the story, with the two of them being united. But I can't help but wonder, if Edelweiss truly is Mary's mother, would she really give up her daughter like that? Even though Simon is a very powerful man, would that really stop a woman like her from seeing her daughter?
But Edelweiss obviously knows a lot about Mary. Perhaps she knew Mary's mother. Whether it's Edelweiss or someone else, I can definately imagine that it's someone who worked at the Delight Castle. That could be why Simon made the first law of Bon Bon, to hide his shame from everyone else.
I just have no clue as to why he can't just move away from the town. _________________ Constance Mayflower's bio

Edelweiss being Mary's mother might be too easy.
This discussion existed in a previous thread. I'd have to hunt for it so that people can connect the dots.
Anybody have a handy link to the previous threads? _________________ "Every exit is an entrance somewhere else." -Tom Stoppard

Hmm probably Symphony is right and Mary's mother used to work at the Delight Castle. I think the reason Simon can't move has to do something with the Talon's Clan... someone should ask Red about this _________________ click here |

If I remember right Mr. Blue hasn't moved farther away than he has (let's face it, he's not exactly "near" the town) due to business reasons. Something about a diamond mine, I believe. _________________ I like old jokes. With them I know when to laugh. |

It's likely that he's also staying for Mary's sake as the anonimity of Bon Bon could be used to protect her as well. From what though, or if at all, remains to be seen. Once she's married she'd live with her husband, preferably somewhere far away from Bon Bon if Simon gets his wish. _________________ I like old jokes. With them I know when to laugh. |

There's definately something about that first law of Bon Bon, as I think that Simon could very well have had some really personal reasons for making that law. Something that probably has to do with Mary and her mother. That's my guess at least.
The anonymity and his position in Bon Bon, are certainly possible reasons why he is staying there with Mary until she marries. He might not be able to control her life and protect her from prying eyes in any other town. _________________ Constance Mayflower's bio

I just can't fit in the Clan of the Talon in this, but that's also because we don't really know much about them yet. I think it's pretty safe to assume though, that they play a significant role in many of the mysteries of Bon Bon. _________________ Constance Mayflower's bio

I remember this theory. I just find it interesting that if that was the case, it was Simon who ended up with custody of Mary, rather than her mother. It's a little unusual, but it does point to either Simon being admirably devoted to his child and/or her mother was... lacking in that department. _________________ "Doktor! Then again, perhaps things were different in the Victorian era as far as cultural assumptions of who would be best suited to raise the child (mother vs. father)... If there had been some sort of divorce or something wherein custody of Mary was under dispute, it could simply be that Simon, being as rich as he is, was deemed to be more financially secure and thus better able to provide a stable homelife to his child.
Then again, this is still assuming that Mary's mother is alive or was in any capacity to plead for custody of her child in any way. Or that Mr. Blue simply didn't buy off some judges or something... _________________ Johnny's Fanfics (including Sureshot! A Bon Bon Tale)

You're also assuming that Simon and Mary's mother were married in the first place. If Edleweiss is the mother it's possible that Mary was an... unexpected result of her and Simon's coupling. _________________ I like old jokes. With them I know when to laugh. |

I'm still leaning towards the assumption that Mary's mother really is dead. I can imagine her as being one of the girls working at the Delight Castle, and perhaps even very close friend of Edelweiss. She may have fallen in love with Simon, who was one of her customers. They marry, he makes her quit her job at the castle and come live with him, she gives birth to Mary, she dies from illness or something like that.
Simon could have used the first law of Bon Bon to cover up the fact that he married a prostitute, but I'm not really sure when he made that law and whether he was already the mayor of Bon Bon when he met Mary's mother.
But that would severely limit the possibilities for something special to happen when the truth about Mary's mother is revealed. Having Edelweiss as her mother would seem a more happy option for Mary, but I just don't see Edelweiss as a woman who would give up her daughter like that. She seems far too protective to do something like that. Though there could be something about her we don't know yet.
I like to think that we haven't even come close to figuring out the truth about Mary's mother. _________________ Constance Mayflower's bio

Mr. Blue being forced to stay in the house with Mary until Mary is married could be part of a bargain he struck with Mary's mother... Maybe it was the only way she could keep Mary near |
