Though I'm not new to the Furry fandom, this is the first Furry message board I've been a member of. The whole fursona concept is therefore rather new to me, and I've been thinking about why people pick the fursonas that they do. Is it because you identify with the animal it's based on? Because you admire certain traits of it, or the way it looks?

Did you choose your fursona because it's the way you'd like to look in the world of Bon Bon, or because it's a character you just like to read about and look at, in either a normal or erotic way?

Really, I'm curious about all the furry fans here and their resons for picking their fursona, whether they have reached the point where Vanessa draws their character or not.

I chose Ashton Gray as my fursona for several reasons. One: He was my first furry creation. Two: His personality is based on my own. Three: He was the best choice for a story like this. And four: He is one of my favorite creations.

A cheshire cat suits my personality - I keep myself to myself and I'm just a little insane. I've always loved the colour purple and cats have been my favourite animal since I was little.

I see. I haven't really got many furry creations myself. There are a couple in my head, but only one that's really fleshed out and written down, because that's the one I plan on asking Vanessa to draw when I eventually reach that point.

And if you don't mind me asking, Ashton, why did you choose a wolf in the first place? Wolves are pretty cool BTW.

And Chessy, I love cats as well. I grew up with cats in the house, and I often miss them today. Still, though they would be my preferred choice if I'll ever get a new pet, they've never been my favorites in furry artwork Confused Not that I dislike them though, it's just that there are others I tend to like more. I don't really understand that myself.

I chose a wolf for two reasons. One: I chose the name first and started looking for an animal with a matching fur color. I chose the Gray Wolf. And two: The wolf is one of my favorite animals.

I chose my fursona based on a couple of things. Im actually about to begin training as a firefighter so the job made sense. I love dogs but I couldnt decide on which type. So I went with a firefighters best friend.

I don't really know why I chose him he has been there in the back of my brain for a long time now just waiting to come out. I've never actually described him or wrote it out before this but he has always been a part of me.

That's interesting, because I've also thought about the occupation that people pick for their fursona. I was inspired by another thread about how it seemed that many chose warrior-like characters.

So did you discover anything new about your fursona, when you wrote his description? I've found with other things as well as my potential fursona, that when I start writing, it's like it goes way beyond my initial thoughts and intentions. It's like I have to develop the story or character much more when I'm writing it down and intent to present it to others. Makes me feel like I lose control and just have to go along with the story. It's the same with the fursona I'm working on. I keep adding to it and try to make it as clearly defined as possible.

And it's been really interesting to read the descriptions that people have posted in the avatar threads.

To be honest, I actually have multiple fursonas, usually on different sites or to suit my different moods. I suppose one might say I'm a bit fickle, but I just think it's impossible for me to truly declare one animal-fursona as my favorite over any others. It'd be like saying your favorite food is pizza, and then eating nothing but pizza for the rest of your life... eventually a salad or a meatloaf starts looking pretty good...

I basically "settled" on a coyote fursona because I wanted a fursona that reflected my both my Native American heritage and my more "wild" moods. Coyotes are native only to North and Central America, and have been the heroic tricksters of legend for many tribes in the U.S. I've also always loved coyotes, as they're plucky survivors, often living in areas that bigger predators, like wolves, wouldn't last very long in. An animal that lives on wits and determination, and that inspired many myths about itself among human storytellers, seemed like an ideal species to pick for my own "trickster" persona...

Still, I had other ideas in mind too... For a while, I thought about making "Johnny Six-Killer" a rabbit, or even a jackalope (I do have a couple of different Jackalope characters, actually, one of which actually shows up in some of my Johnny Six-Killer writings). Other animals I considered were raven, turtle, bobcat, and even a lizard!

I chose a tiger for my fursona because I always loved and admired tigers; Strong and fearless lone hunters that don't need anyone. I got the name "Midnight" when i imagined the what kind of past my fursona would have to make him strong, fearless, and a kind hearted loner who wouldn't mind friendly company; and I came up with a miner, what it would look like for a tiger to come out of a mine shaft covered in silt coloring him pure black.

Hmm,.. kinda a hard question i think myself, at least to me it kinda is.

Species was easy, i have a feline personality, and have since a child. Generally graceful, quiet (unless i am talking with purpose) sometimes solitary, enjoy sleeping in sun beamed windows. As for my Breed, that being a panther. When i first started out, and forming my fursona i was thinking a lion (which lasted about 2 or 3 day) i simply knew i wasn't a Lion,... then i went tiger, and was good with that for a while, until i realized Tigers are the cat that loves water the most, and being aquaphobic, that was not me,.. then i realised how much i loved trees and thick forests/jungles (Being a BC, Canada Resident, i have thick forests all around) so, i came up with panther.

As for personality, well a lot of it is my everyday personality, as i began to explore my adulthood(age 22, newly moved away from parents and to a big city from a small town) i just grew to form a new me, with half of him being my fursona. Naturally i act out small adjustments depending on mood, or environment, aka BonBon he is an ambitious crimelord hungry for much power, but, smart enough not to barge in on a business that he has no place near, (meaning he has no qualms with the Palace, but will frequent it for his own pleasures to be satisfied.

I actually have two different fursonas in my head: my current avatar, and a golden-furred fox. The reason for the two, is because my personality tends to switch from one to the other depending on the situation, or at the drop of a hat. There are times when I'm serious and thoughtful(wolf), and there are times when I'm playful and tricky(fox). I had to flip a coin to decide which one I wanted Vanessa to draw.

Neither really had names before I joined this forum. The fox still doesn't. The wolf got his name because I always liked the name "Donovan", and "Lancaster" just popped into my head when I was trying to decide on a last name, and I like the way it sounded.

As for the fur colors, I just thought it looks cool. Surprisingly enough, the fact that I'm a blond didn't even influence it, except maybe, at a subconscious level.

Normaly I think of my self a dangerous female tiger, but I didn't think it fitted with Bon Bon. (She would become too cute.)
Therefore did I choose a fox personality. And to stand out from the other foxes I choose to be a blue silver fox.
(see my picture in the thread JOY). Wink

I do have more than one fusona in my mind too. One is Strauss, and it came up from a personal story incolving beautiful girls and planes Razz
The other has no name (yet) and is sort of a werewolf, under my skin. I thought Strauss fitted more -_-

Wolverines always held a deep fascination for me. Hard core survivors, they never give in or turn tail. They suit my own personality quite well. If there is one thing I have had much practice with it is surviving. Also, being of Native American descent as well, and having heard the many stories of these animals, it seemed a natural choice.

Plus, personally i have rarely seen them portrayed in this way very often, and i do love being different. Wink lol

Well, Xebulon is a new character for me. I had originally created him for a story I was trying to write and out of all the characters I had come up with, he seemed the easiest to convert to the world of Bon Bon. My usual avatar http://shamoncornell.deviantart.com/art/Skylore-51186245 was too steeped in the realm of science fiction to work here. Also a little too aggressive.

As to why Xeb is the way he is, well, I got the name from an old history textbook. Zebulon Burke, if I remember correctly, was an explorer during the time of Louis and Clarke but instead of heading out West, he stayed here in the East. Mainly Virginia. Apparently there's a place called Burke's Peak that's named for him but I have no idea where. Anyways, I think it's a freaking cool name so I, uh, "borrowed" it. I made him a bear for several reasons. Bears are not as common as the various species that seem to populate a majority of the furry fandom (cats, dogs, wolves, foxes, skunks, etc.). I wanted to be just a little bit different than the norm (but not too wacko like 1/2 elf, 1/2 possum 1/2 dragon, 1/2 fairy, 1/2 demon, 1/2 angel, 1/2 cat), so bear. The decision to make him something of an author/scholar was more in keeping with the profession I had created him for originally.

The reason I used him rather than try to create yet another new character was, basically, I'm lazy that way. whistling Laughing

Cool, I'm actually a member of the Potawatomi tribe. My dad is full-blooded, while my mom is a mix of stuff, including a couple of other tribes and some French, but traching down which tribes are in mom's side of the family has been difficult. By official accounts, I'm only considered "1/2 blood".

That's why I wanted my fursona, Johnny Six-Killer, to be of mixed ancestry as well (he's half Potawatomi, half Cherokee) and to be in a similar position as myself, spending much of his childhood away from the Indian community and having to learn more about his culture at an older age. It might sound odd, but having been a product of the U.S. public education system, I had very little knowledge of my own heritage before going to college beyond what little my parents could teach me, and even then I learned so much more once I actually started taking Native American Studies courses.

I actually almost wanted to make Johnny Six-killer a more obvious "half-breed" character, making him half coyote and half domesticated dog, or "coydog" as they're sometimes called. But, I figured that'd be too much overt symbolism of the pitfalls of race-relations for a webcomic about talking animals...

I like the way on how i came up with my fursona Darkwulf, granted I only came out with the last name of Shadowfang just recently.

Darkwulf Shadowfang is an interesting character, this character is really based off of my own interests and feelings, Darkwulf is a rare breed of a species of wolf and tiger mix, black fur with orange stripes, average build, kind and caring however he has a very short fuse and tends to be a loner, he likes to make friends and will do whatever it takes to protect them.

As an ex-soldier/mercenary he does what he feels like is the best path to go through, he carries around 2 weapons, the main one he uses is a sword where the blade is black which he calls Chaosbringer, the other weapon is a Rapier which is concealed in the cane that carries around. His weapons are noticeable by the ying-yang symbol on the hilts of the weapons.

I'll put more description in later on in the future.

*shrug* I suppose I understand that... I have some cousins who lived on or closer to the rez than I did, and they're pretty ambivelent about the culture. I suppose when you're surrounded by it, you don't think much of it, but when you grow up far away from it, like I did, you start to feel like you're missing out...

Anyway, back on topic, I think it's interesting how many guys in here have characters who are military or fighter-types. I suppose having dangerous occupations makes one seem more interesting a character. To be honest, I only made my fursona a gunslinger at the last second. Originally he was just going to be a rancher and a storyteller, but I couldn't think of any reason why someone like that would travel so far away from his home to a town like BonBon... just didn't fit. So, looking back in the history books, I realized that a performer at a Wild West show would be perfect, and somehow that led to him being a shootist and a former outlaw. Guess even I couldn't get away from making my character much cooler than I am in real life. Laughing

Well really i chose that profession as more of a way to be able to protect others, but that's pretty much it. I never really thought of a character of a different profession but that might be a new character that i can think of for future references Very Happy

But I think that it's cool on the way how you created your character, the background and the profession is cool

Well the reason i chose the occupation for my character that i did was simply because it was what most young Irish men were during that time. with the strong English presence in Ireland most young men were forced to leave and find employment in the armed forces of other countries. The fact that i am military myself did influence it some.

How did I come up with Leon... Well, in my long term roleplaying with pen and paper, the name Silvercross has become a universal name to my myrad of charicters, as they all were fighters or hunters of the far less thn natural; Demons, undead, spirits... After seeing Van Helsing, I finally found a good mold to build a job style around.

When I started to look for a animal to use, I wanted one who had much more than fangs or claws, cause I doubt ANY fur would want to sink their fangs into rotting zombie meat. So, I took into consideration that I've never used a masupial before, and when I considered one, the kangaroo, my favorite, came to mind.

For one thing, they have quite large feet, and no doubt powerful legs too. If it's not safe to bite a zombie, then it's far better to give them a full force kick to the face. It wasn't long after I thought up Leon that I considered he needed a back story as to why someone who fights demons and vampires for a living came to Bon Bon, and why he's looking for at least a year or two of peace.

Hence, what I hope to be my life's greatest achivement, Path of Darkness, was born. I hope to have Chapter 8 ready for viewing soon.
