i just put my snake "down"...
i've had him for like 12 years, since he was a baby - he was about 6 ft. long and weighed about 17 lbs.
i had to do it though, he got sick in april - i took him to the vet and she gave me a few medications and some injections to give him. he got better, but still has not eaten since april! i checked on him and tried to get him to eat the other day - he still wouldn't eat, and now his mouth is all rotted ( snakes get a disease called "mouth rot" ). i felt really bad for him, but i know he must have been suffering...
he's lived a long, happy life though - i had done some research, and apparantly, the most humane thing to do is to put him in the freezer - i guess they just go to sleep, and don't wake up...
this sucks!!!

Wow, J3....I'm so sorry honey. Sad I know it must have been hard...but it's a very unselfish thing to do. Poor little guy... Fortunately, I've never had to face that situation. One of my biggest fears is having to make a decision like that for a family member. I know I COULD NOT do it. That would be a choice....I just could not make. I would not be strong enough for that. Life is hard....buts that's why we have each other to lean on.

Thank you for being there for me in the past...and just know that I'm here for you now.

love you lots sweetie....

big hugs and kisses.

xoxo

Hey J3

I am really sorry to hear about the loss of your pet. I know how hard it is to put a pet down that we love so much. I mean they are there everyday, and we come to depend on seeing them and enjoying them loving them and taking care of them everyday. We worry to no end when they are hurt or sick. We rush them to the vet and we do't care about the cost. Just make them well. We love them and they are a part of the family.

Anyway Justin, just know that you did the right thing. Your buddy was sick and suffering. I know it sucks really bad. But you have alot of memeries and hopefully alot of great picture's of your good buddy. Lean on those and remember all the cool things with him and laugh about all the funny things.

It is hard for a while not having your buddy there. But in due time it will pass. I have good thoughts for you Justin. 12 good yrs. with a loving pet is a good while. I know it really sucks, but just hang in there J3. I know you will and life is good again.

Good Thoughts and Blessings Justin

thank you sooo much, Alley and nebraska! Smile

yes, it was a really difficult thing to do yesterday... but i've had some time to think about it, and i know he's a lot happier now - i knew that when i did it, but it's easier to accept now.
Alley - you are lucky that you have never had to deal with that... i has to be one of the hardest decisions in life - deciding what to do with a loved ones life... it may be a bit different w/ a pet, i'm sure a lot of people will say it's no big deal because it's an animal, but when it's a pet that you've cared for and has been there for years like nebraska stated, it becomes a member of your family. this is the third pet i've had to put down - and it's tough!!
Nebraska - i know you just went through an ordeal w/ your dog... and i know what you mean - whatever the cost to get them better! they mine as well be one of your children!

anyways, i'm doing a lot better today - thank you both for your kind words! it really means a lot to me!!

love you guys! Wink

Putting down a pet that you've had for years amounts to putting down a friend in my book. I had a horse put down once. It wasn't even mine, it was owned by one of my female friends (won't say girlfriend, might give people the wrong idea Razz ), and it was still a hard thing. Maybe because I've dealt with and loved horses for most of my life.

And yes, lots of people don't understand how hard it is. But hey, better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all, right?

Sorry to hear about your pet, J3. I think you did right by letting him go. If you love someone, you must love them enough to let them go. Stay strong. Crying or Very sad

Sorry to hear about your snake, j3a.

What kind of snake was it? I'm sure you know that if the meal that you fed him in April was large enough, the snake can fast for a long time. A python can fast for a year after eating a large prey.

But, again, sorry to hear about this. I apologize if any disrespect was given.

hey gthang-

he was a red-tail boa. all his life i fed him once a week - as far as meal size goes, i stopped at large rats as he matured ( i did not want him to grow too large - which is also the reason for the weekly feedings ) you can get them [boas] to grow larger by increasing the size and frequency of meals. from what i have researched, he could have gone 3-4 months max for his size, without eating.
- no disrespect taken Smile

thanks for your condolences!
