Well, just dug through the story, and found it quite an enjoyable read. Should you wish, feel free to use my badger in the story.

Another thought just ocurred to me. With Stone being a north american badger, he's likely a native american as well. Wonder what tribe he'd be part of?

What a coincidence, I was about to start asking people if they didn't mind their fursonas making cameo appearances here or there in my stories. I'll pencil in Doc Stone for a cameo (already have a couple ideas).

As for the idea of basing cultural background to the species of animal, I've had a while to think about that and have come up with a few ideas. For instance, both Johnny Six-killer and Daisy Nugget are coyotes, but they're not exactly the same cultural background as far as I've written them. Daisy will be more of a Texas cowgirl, and her family are a part of the mainstream "American" society. The way I figure it is that some individuals like Daisy and her family may have some Native American roots due to their species being native to the continent, but they adapted to the surrounding cultures and therefore are not particularly associated with any tribal affiliation. (Besides, so many people these days claim at least a small part of Indian ancestry anyway, this could be just one way of displaying the emerging "melting pot" society of America). Of course, I'd hate to start a precedent of basing cultural heritage on the species of a person's fursona, which is why I believe that anyone from any species can adopt whatever culture or society they prefer as their own.

Anyway, Marauder, if you believe that Doc Stone would have some sort of tribal affiliation, you can always give me some ideas (like where he's originally from, regionally, would better determine what tribe he might be associated with historically). On the other hand, it could be that Doc doesn't really know or care that much about his ancestry and considers himself just plain "American", sort of like Daisy. It's up to you how you want to identify him.

On a side note, I'm hoping to get the second chapter done soon... I know I promised it a while ago, but outside forces have been preventing me from sitting down and writing recently. Again, I'll make an announcement when it's up...

Hmm, if it helps any, I was thinking of having Stone as a gunsmith as well as inventor, which means he'd be the one to see for any work needing to be done. While having been raised by settlers, I'd been considering having him either from around Peshtigo Wisconsin, or the area around Gills rock in door county, overlooking the stretch between Door county and Washington island, the one the French trappers who explored the area called 'Death's Door'

Wow, okay, that is specific, but I think I happen to know some information... Along the southern shores of Lakes Michigan and Superior were the Potawatomi peoples, one of the "Three Fires" tribes of the Great Lakes; the other two were the Ojibwe (Chippewa) and Odawa (Ottawa) tribes. As I've stated before in the historical notes of my first chapter, the Treaty of Chicago in 1833 ushered in the "Removal Era", which affected many tribes east of the Mississippi, especially the Potawatomi. Most were forced into the Indian Territories, and many still live in their reservation lands in both Oklahoma and Kansas. But there were a few stragglers, and during much of the 1800s there were many Potawatomi that hid in the northern woodlands of Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, becoming "straying bands" of Potawatomi. These people would soon get help from missionaries in attaining their own land and developing their own communities.

The Forest County Potawatomi Community is one such community, located in Forest County, Wisconsin, not far from the town of Peshtigo (which is in neighboring Marinette County). It wasn't until the mid-1890's that the first Potawatomi families purchased and moved onto these lands, and it wasn't until 1913 that Forest County's reservation was established. Therefor, before the start of the current Bon Bon story-line, very few of these Potawatomi were settled down or having much contact with "white men".

In real life, my own tribal heritage is Potawatomi, from one of these straggling bands that would later settle the Hannahville Indian Community in Northern Michigan, so I suppose I might be more than a little prejudiced about having another character with Potawatomi heritage in here (historically speaking, many other tribes have lived in the area as well, including Ojibwe and Menominee). If you really want to create a Native American ancestry for Doc Stone, I'd say any of these would be fine, though I would argue that perhaps, being raised by settlers, he knows near to nothing about his heritage.

Again, it's your choice if you want to add that kind of dimension to the character. I just want to re-state the idea that cultural heritage and identity should not be confined to the species of the character, if only because I don't like the idea of species-ism showing up in stories. I'd also point out that we already have a couple of characters who exhibit the opposite of the "culture based on species" motif: Xebulon Burke, for one, is an Englishman (if I remember correctly), but he's also Kodiak bear (which are definitely NOT native to England); even our lovely Violet Berry, a raccoon, would be an odd sight in Europe (the Common Raccoon is native to North America, and was introduced in Continental Europe in the 1930's or 40's, where they have flourished due to lack of natural predators).

As you can see, one can give themselves a headache trying to piece together a tangible link between species and culture, so I figure it's really nothing to worry about in the long run. Still, I hope this information was helpful...

Well, that was a rather insightful and intresting read, thank you very much, Johnny. If I may ask, where did you find this rather intresting information? Was it from any one place or is this just what you were taught?

most of the Forest County Potawatomi Community information can be found off of their own website at http://www.fcpotawatomi.com/
and from their museum site at http://www.potawatomimuseum.com/

My own community is still in the process of creating a good website, but one of the tribal members has written down a nice history of the founding of the Hannahville Indian Community at http://www.hannahville.net/ (just click on the frame-button marked "History")

I didn't really grow up learning a whole lot about Native American history except what little my parents could teach me about our culture. Beyond that, sadly, I had to depend a lot on the American public school system to teach me about "American Indians", which really wasn't much. I basically knew about Cortez's conquest of the Aztecs, the Trail of Tears and the Removal Act and very little about the so-called "Indian Wars" and Little Bighorn, but after that most highschool books tend to forget all about Indians all together. Thousands of years of Native civilization in the American continents, not to mention hundreds of years of Indians encountering European explorers and settlers, all summed up in one chapter of your average American highschool history book. I had to specifically take Native American Studies courses in college before I learned about such things as the Dawes Act, the Wheeler-Howard Act, the American Indian Religious Freedom Act, the American Indian Movement and Leonard Peltier, just to name a few...

Buuuut anyway, enough of my bitching about the public school system. As you can tell, I've a knack for really studying the facts of history and the way in which they relate to today. Still, I wouldn't want to bore people to death with countless history facts in my stories, which is why I tend to leave that stuff at the end of chapters, where people can read if they're curious...

Second chapter coming soon (yeah yeah, I know, I've said it before)!

Well, I'm all for you using my characters Johnny, except how my storyline goes with Labrn & Mystic, they havn't made it to America yet. They've stopped good and well in BonBon. Though, to help keep their travels funded, Mystic has been known to lease Labrn's Bodyguard services to others when she's in a safe haven. That or use his skills from the sister assasin academy and bounty hunt. . . and you do have a price on you head. Curious

Other than that, peole who migrate tend to bring pets with them, and plenty of people have had odd pets. (Not to mention the whole Zoo thing) You could find just about any species anywhere, as long as you can create a story them.

And don't beat yourself up too much, don't forget I still need to post Labrn's story, which I think I've given a few tidbits of his past, but no one will have a clue about him.

Sorry it's taken so long for the second chapter to show up, I just keep re-writing things and then rearranging things that fit better in other places in the story... I'm my own worst critic.

My access to the internet might be spotty for a while, but I'm hopeful about keeping in touch with the site, and I'll still work on the story even without internet... again, I have too many ideas for things to stay in my brain for too long.

Oh, of course... in fact, I'm hoping to find a way to check out the site at least once a week any way I can (which may or may not involve mooching Internet access from friends' computers). As soon as I finish the next chapter and find a way to get online, I'll definitely share!

Howdy, folks! You miss me? I know I missed coming in here... and man, has this place ever been busy! It's going to take me a while to catch up to all the new people and threads in here!

I'm not "officially" back online yet... I'm hoping mid-October I'll have internet access at my own house. Right now, I'm having to covertly check in on things whenever and where-ever I can (currently, I'm sneaking peeks at the site in one of the university library's computer lab... we'll see how long until someone notices Laughing ).

I'm hoping to be able to post the second chapter of my story before too long, it's just hard to find time sometimes to write when you have two jobs! Sad So far, the second chapter is almost exclusively centered on Daisy Nugget and her background (since Vanessa's given me freedom to create her back-story, I'm hoping to create something fun and interesting for her).

Anyway, it's nice to be back in here, even for a short time. It's like slipping into an old, comfortable pair of shoes... almost feels like I never left.

Dang, I missed your brief return due to my last week or so of scholarly insanity. It has not been the same without you. But at least it's only two more weeks or so to go.

I still like that hat, too. Razz

I realize I wasn't able to fulfill my promises on a speedy story, but I still try to find time to write as much as I can. Right now, I'm sure I have a couple of chapter's worth or material, but have simply been figuring out how to piece it all together into a fun and readable story. So yes, there are more chapters being written for my BonBon fanfic, I'm just very, very slow. Sorry!

Anyway, I don't want anyone to feel like I haven't done anything, so I'm gonna provide a sneak-preview of the story by introducing a couple of characters created just for the story. Again, I'm not necessarily creating characters to be included in the canon of the main BonBon plot, since much of the story I've written can be considered a "side story" for my fursona. Still, since Johnny Six-Killer and Daisy Nugget are both from the U.S., their adventures in the American West have brought them into contact with numerous interesting characters prior to their BonBon adventures...

Quote:
Henry "Hank" Duggins is a large Hereford bull who, ironically, is a cowboy! He is a very honest, forthright person, but a little short on smarts and has a tendency for gullability. In his introduction to the story, he's a local ranch-hand who develops a crush on Daisy, even going so far as volunteering himself to be her own personal chaperone and body-guard, even though she never asked him. Even though he fancies Daisy quite a bit, he's too bashful to ask her on a real date, and she mostly sees the poor guy as nothing more than a "loveable buffoon". He mostly dislikes Johnny when they first meet, as he was not only an "outsider" but also a possible threat to his relationship with Daisy.

Ellie Weaver is a petite Hedgehog girl and childhood friend of Daisy. She is an accomplished seamstress/dressmaker, and even started her own dress boutique in her home town at a young age, where she makes a comfortable living making and altering dresses for all the ladies of her town. She often acts as the balancing "voice of reason" to the much more impetuous Daisy, but even Ellie can't resist joining in some of Daisy's adventures from time to time. She seems mostly indifferent toward many of the male characters in town, even Johnny when she first met him, though she does have a secret crush that only her best friend is aware of...

Sherrif Seth Blaylock is well known for being a tough and ever vigilent lawman. He is notoriously tenacious in his pursuit of outlaws in his town and the surrounding county, and most smart outlaws tend to give his jurisdiction a wide berth. Though a career lawman, he also owns his own small cattle ranch, and he also maintains a small fortune in gold that he attained in the Black Hills Gold Rush prior to moving to Texas. Just like most lawmen, he had an immediate dislike of Johnny when they first met (mostly mutual), and his relationship to Daisy... well, I can't give away all the secrets yet!

Okay, after much editing, re-writing, plus some detective work (mostly figuring out where I put certain story notes and fragments on my computer), I'm actually pretty close to finishing a chapter, though I'm not going to post it until I'm more certain of how the third chapter will work (yeah, I know, it might now sound like it makes sense, but trust me).

Anyway, I wanted to also say that Xebullon and Kommy's characters are making cameos in the second chapter, along with numerous other characters both from Bon Bon canon and of my own creation. I just wanted to make sure it was okay from both Xeb and Kommy that their avatars make an appearance, though I can easily re-write one sequence of the story if I have to. To be honest, I had to do a bit of searching in the archived threads to find the original background information on both Dr. Fuchs and Mr. Burke...

More news to come, when they happen...

I don't mind Johnny, if anything I'm flattered. Very Happy Though there's only one "L" in Xebulon. Very Happy It has been a while since the generic "Histories" thread was used, hasn't it?

Thanks Xeb, both for okaying your use in my story (don't worry, nothing too torrid or fiendish... yet... muahahahaha), and for reminding me to pay better attention to how I spell people's names. Seriously, it took me halfway through writing this chapter before I realized I mis-spelled Sibilla's name (who also makes a quick but important cameo in this chapter).

After much reconfiguring, the second chapter is set entirely in Bon Bon, thus why so many avatar and canon characters are making appearances. I finally realized there was no good way to write the second chapter in the same format as I did the first, with numerous flashbacks and flash-forwards between 1885 and 1895. For continuity's sake, Chapter 2 is set in the "present" of 1895, and Chapter 3 in 1888. Less jumping back and forth is easier on the brain of the author writing it, that's for sure!

That's probably the best way to do it Johnny. And good luck keeping it all straight and sorted out. It can be difficult when you alternate chapters like that. I eargly look forward to reading it though.

Finally, after a long wait, the second chapter of my fanfic Sureshot! A Bon Bon Tale is up at Yiffstar.com

http://www.yiffstar.com/?pid=52266

And if you haven't read the first one yet, it's here:

http://www.yiffstar.com/?pid=25359

Hope everyone enjoys it. Now I just have to slog through my notes to figure out how to write the third chapter.

Characters who show up in the second chapter: Daisy Nugget, Sibilla La Noire, Xebulon Burke, Cammy Fuchs, "Jackalope" Bill Bircham (my own character)

Numerous other characters are also mentioned in passing (like "Princess" Betty Goldblum) or alluded to without actually naming (try to guess which ones!). Since the entire chapter is set in Bon Bon, it's not hard to see why so many cameos and shout-outs were necessary.

Looking good so far Johnny! And I have to say that the cliffhanger at the end was an interesting twist. I imagine he really wouldn't mind seeing Stone walking through the door with his light machinegun prototype in paw right about then.

Don't worry, Doc Stone is sure to make at least one appearance in the story... I remember you seemed interested in letting your character be involved. I have a feeling Johnny might be escaping his current predicament with the use of a gadget or two supplied to him by the town's friendly mechanical wiz, à la The Wild Wild West (the good version, not the crappy Will Smith movie).

On a side note, Marauder, I was wondering, how far back would you like Johnny and Robert's acquaintance with one another to go? I'm still fleshing out much of the story, and realized I might have room to fit one or two Royal Member cameos into some of the "flashbacks" to 1888. Let me know where you think your character would have been 7 years prior to coming to Bon Bon. If your answer is "somewhere in the American West", I might just have an idea or two...

Where was Stone seven years prior? Hmm, I'd have to guess still working the Mississippi riverboats as an engineer, most likely shortly before his ill-fated last trip where the 'boat he was working on blew up, burned, and sank as a result of the chief engineer 'wiring up' the boiler.
