Done out of boredom after class. This is Lidia Apricot's name in Chinese:
The name would be Qidiaojiao which when translated is someone who's lovable. I know she's not here now but hopefully she'll see this.

Very excellent question Caroline. For Westerners I can transliterate the name phonetically so say for example Caroline would be pronounced Kǎ luó lín which,if I used any characters wouldn't make sense. However the Chinese name their children based on either the natural world around the child or aspects of the child's personality. So again for example I take your name Caroline and used the personality trait of intelligence your Chinese name would be Caoling which when translated is someone who's quick-witted,alert,efficacious,and effective.

No worries. My sense of humor is... ephemeral, at best. Esoteric at worst.
Anyway, in an effort to try to explain, I'm not familiar with Mandarin at all... so your transliteration of Mandarin into English made me think of a sneeze... which means I have to say "Bless you", based off of that old wives tale about sneezes and your soul... and, since I grew up in central PA, we don't say "Bless you". We say "gethzunteight", due to the germanic influances.
Which, in turn, I found funny.
Um... yeah. Me and my sense of humor. )) |

Normally my family and I would travel to China to visit relatives and celebrate in a more traditional style however, my mother's and grandmother's age and health limit their travel so my brothers and sister decided to go to Florida to visit and celebrate with our mother and grandmother.
My siblings and I help with cleaning the house(it symbolizes getting rid of the old and inviting in the new). At the end of the following week(New Year's Eve) we have "reunion dinner" and pass out red envelopes to our elders and kids and everyone stays up to midnight. The following day we make an offering to our departed.
