Well in case anyone was worried, I'm not dead (not yet thankfully)
Sadly I can't say much cause I don't know how long the signal will last. (The military blocked PBB so I haven't been able to log in since before I got deployed. I'm on right now cause my cell temporarily caught a signal strong enough to support me getting online)
So I am just checking in to see how everyone is doing (I can't wait till I'm able to normally communicate with you all again). I would really appreciate it if someone could give me updates or what have you via this thread. I may not be able to check it every time there is a post but when I can check it will make it easier for me cause its in one place.
I hope everyone is doing ok. And thank you all again for your kindness when I left.
To all of you new members that I haven't met yet: Welcome to BonBon I hope you enjoy it here.
Hahaha, I almost feel like I'm writing to a pen-pal in grade school. I wouldn't mind that either though. It just hit me that I probably sound desperate and/or creepy. I'm sorry its just I don't have anyone to talk to and its hard for me. We don't have any mail, phones (yes I have my cell but its connected to an Iranian network and they monitor all calls we make and trace the numbers. I've only made one call since I got here, it was to my parents, and a week later my command notified me that someone had called them saying I was captured and executed. No mother should ever have to hear that about their son, even if it is a lie), or internet out here.
I'm not asking for pity or sympathy (I signed up for this) I'm just asking for someone to talk to.
Take care;

Yay! We finally got a satellite so I have a (somewhat) reliable internet connection. So I'm back.

Yeah I kinda got screwed over and didn't have a chance to let anyone know that i was leaving. I was given a 10 hours notice that instead of leaving in 2 weeks (like i was supposed to) I was leaving at 4 AM the next morning.

Luckily I haven't been bitten yet but i got sun poisoning on my face within the first week of being in country. It wasn't too bad the worst part of it was my co-workers harassing me about it. Oh well.

That's the best advice I can say.
Also, make sure to keep connections to you're selves so that no one does that
"You're son has been KIA."
Thing. |
Or blown up. I'm more worried about landmines than bullets. And I tried to stay in touch but the signal has been so unreliable that most calls won't really go through. Thankfully my mom was smart enough to look into it before doing anything else by calling my unit's HQ back in Germany and the Army defused the situation. I try to talk with my family as often as I can, even if it’s just a quick hello, however that ends up being once every other week if I’m lucky. But now that I’m online i can at least IM them.
Thank you all three of you. _________________ Story

Steer clear of open areas or spots that have large bumps on the normal road.
Amateur bomb placements can be detected with a sublime eye.
Try to stay within boudaries and if a spot looks like it has a mine, step at least 20 feet away and plug a round into it. |
I'm more worried about the ones that the Russians threw EVERYWHERE while they were here. Just on the inside of our little post over 23 hundred have been found. In fact that was my greeting when I landed here. I climbed down the ramp of the CH-47 and not even 3 feet away from me (just off of the runway) was an anti-tank mine. Just chilling there screaming, "Hey look I'm a mine! Welcome to the post that the Army forgot about." _________________ Story

That is scary and funny at the same time.
Don't they have anti mine detecting devices? |
Most of the USSR's old mines have a plastic based body not to mention (as I've been told) "there are too many for it to be practical" _________________ Story

So they have to be disarmed manually then?
Well then, be careful of where you step and make sure to remember footprints. They can lead you by a safe path, or show you were some unlucky soul got his sex blown in millions of pieces.
(Landmines blow below you, so that thing between you're pants is most likely screwed.) |
Yep.
And you might get lucky.... ...it could be a small one and your "jimmies" will still be fine.
..or you may hit a "Bouncing Betty" and just be all around screwed..... _________________ Story

Dang man, well be careful out there and come back safe and sound. When I was deployed to Iraq I was driving around in an RG31 conducting rout clearance missions. Sounds like you're doing something similar.
Anyway, good luck and come home safe. _________________ I am what I am and proud to be who I am.
