Hi Jana

I don't know if it was reported in the US, but the Czech Republic was in the news over here in the UK a couple of days ago.

The British news teams went over to Czech to report on the celebrations to commemorate 15 years since the 'velvet revolution' and the fall of communism. Lots of people were having parties in Prague and Brno, and they interviewed Vaclav Havel about the changes in the country since the revolution. There were also a few people they interviewed who said they wanted to return to communism, but they were very much in the minority.

Just thought you might be interested to hear about it.

it seem strange to me that some one would wish to return to comunist rule. is it just the old comunist party members mising the power they used to have or is it people mising the state looking after them . the czech republik is do ing well from the reports ive heard.

It's an immensely complicated situation and I wouldn't pretend to understand it fully.

From what I gathered from the people being interviewed, they were feeling that the change from a communist state to a free market economy had hurt them and their businesses. Whereas before they could rely on state subsidies to help them out, now they were expected to compete unaided on the more volatile open market. Some people were also unhappy that the country had been split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

And while Prague has become a very popular tourist destination for Europeans - especially since the Czech Republic became part of the European Community, which means that any fellow Europeans can travel in and out of the country without restriction - some of the older people were unhappy with the type of tourist that was arriving in the country. (Just to explain this last bit: because it is so close to countries like the UK and because prices are relatively low compared with places like France and Germany, Prague has become a very popular destination for weekend breaks. I know a lot of people, for example, who go over for New Year celebrations in the city which are famously fun. However, this has also made the city a magnet for groups of young men looking for a place to get drunk and raise hell and basically do the sorts of things they would be too ashamed to do at home. Some of the older Czechs feel these 'lager louts' are doing a lot of harm to the country's reputation and causing an increase in crime, prostitution and drug use in the city.)

There is another rather ugly outcome of East Europe's entry into the European Community that I have encountered. As I said before, because of the lowering of border controls between member states, people have free access to other countries. This means that if I want to live and work in, say, France, I can do so very easily. Hence, a lot of East Europeans have been moving to other countries in search of work. Whilst most people don't have a problem with this (I live next door to a Czech guy on one side and a Slovakian girl on the other and we all get along fine), unfortunately there are a lot of stupid, nationalistic Brits who are bigoted against them and the right wing newspapers are always inventing horror stories about how all East Europeans are crooks. As a result, I think that a lot of East Europeans feel that the full advantages of being part of the EC are being unfairly denied to them.

So while I don't think anyone misses the repressive element of the communist state, I can see how they would feel adrift without the safety net that socialism offered them. And feel that they have been reduced to second-class citizens within Europe as a whole.

Sorry this is such a long post. As I said before, it's an immensely complicated situation and hard to deal with in just a few words.

It is partly the same in Eastern Germany these days having the opinion to go back to socialism because some people think that their life was better then...
Most of the unemployment in Germany is in that area, it takes more
time to get a similar "level" in the old and the new districts than
many people have thought... Confused

Hi Rich where had you been???
It is interesting subject,I dont remember to much from communism, but what I heared form my parents,it wasnt to good time.My mam had to stay long line infront of the store and waiting for bananas. Now you just go and buy how many banans you want.
I thing that just the older people want to return to the communism, not the young people, becouse young people have more options for travel, study, work in other countries atc.

there you are rich. been lookin' for ya. yea, this is an interesting subject. i hope not all the scocial support systems (in the former eastern block nations )failed . i mean, do old people still get help, what about education and medical care . it must be tough if for several generations initiative was suppressed to suddenly be told your on your own. young people could adapt ( look at jana, takeing on the world and makeing her place) but for the old it must be puzzleing.

I been here and there, just haven't left many posts lately. I should warn you though in mid-December I will be leaving for Alaska for six weeks or so (tentatively). I accepted a consulting offer with a company to do some consulting work out there - All expenses paid. I've never been to Alaska, so it should be interesting !?! I'll let you know about when I'm leaving town.

Been lookin' for me? Anything particular, or just wondering where I was? Just hadn't been posting much, but I have been reading the Boards here and at Yahoo.
