Firstly, I would like to apologise for my extended absence, I have absolutely no excuse but now I'm back, I'm back for good! Secondly, this isn't a question for Alley directly but if you have any suggestions Alley then feel free to chip in
Basically I've started a training regime in the gym (five times a week), and I've come across the age old question, are protein shakes really worth the effort and hype? I've been reading up about them on the internet and most of the opinions on the subject are mixed at best, and it seems impossible to get a straight answer. Therefore I've come here, to the home of the most down to earth, intellectual, beautiful people to seek the truth of the matter!
Thank you very much in advance for your suggestions and comments.
Dave

HI Dave!
Well...I happen to believe that protein shakes are VERY good! To be in really good shape you need to take in at least 100 grams of protein a day. There's no way you can do that without the help of some protein shakes and protein bars. Just make sure that you don't go with something that has a lot of added sugars to it. ZONE bars are good....so are DETOUR bars (the non hydrogenated kind). Get a protein shake that has added carbs for to start your morning off....for that extra energy or right before your work out. If you are cutting back your carbs and eating for little carbs.....then try a shake that has little or no carbs added to it.
Eat 5 times a day....make sure they are small meals. Eat half of your regular before diet portion size. Eat protein at each meal. Stay away from protein from red meat. Drink a gallon of water each day. Carry with you a gallon jug of water everywhere you go and make it your goal to finish before the end of the day. Make sure you are eating foods with fiber, whole grains, whole wheat each day too.
Those are the basics for eating healthy and staying fit nutrition.
All you really need is 3 days of working out with weights and core strength training...On the weekends you can do sports associated exercises...like tennis, basketball, baseball, soccer and etc.
As soon as you start to get bored with your weekly workouts try doing a class...with weights or doing drills with a trainer or neighbor. Anything works as long as you continue to move your body and challenge your body in as many different ways as possible. Your body will get used to the same routine if you don't switch things up....and you'll either won't see a lot of results or you'll stop seeing results.
I could go on and on....but I wont. I hope my information has helped you.
I'm a bit passionate about this because at one point I thought of being a traditionalists.
Anyway....can't wait to hear more of your success!

Wow, advice from Alley herself, at least if someone tells me protein shakes are wrong I can say with my head held up high that Alley Baggett thinks protein shakes are good
Thank you soooooooooooo much for your advice Alley, I was starting to drift towards protein shakes but having you give your blessing has made it that much easier I had my mum moaning about them too and she was saying that I should have a high protein diet anyway, but after I explained how much better and quicker the protein shakes are absorbed into the body (especially after training), she backed down a bit
The particular product I was looking at is from a company called Maximuscle, not sure if you have them in the states but here's the link to their site;
http://www.maximuscle.com/promax
There's also one called promax extreme which has more protein and other good stuff in it but think I'll give plain old promax a try first and see how it helps.

Thanks a lot for your advice again Alley, and I will keep you updated on my progress _________________ Dave Eeles

J3 I know that Men's Health Fitness magazine has tons of really great recipes that are men friendly that are also....the yummier versions that men prefer too.
Just pay attention to the serving size so you can divide the entire meal that you fix into the serving size that they give the nutritional info for.
I think that javascript:emoticon(' ')will be your best choice....since most other recipe books ask for a ton of ingredients just for one meal.
If you want to learn more about nutrition and get some other really nice recipes....get LOWFAT COOKING FOR DUMMIES. I have it and I love it! I recommend it to anyone!!! I've learned so much. THE BEST BOOK!!!! and It's easy to understand too.
Let me know what you think J3!
Good Luck.
