|
|
I'm starting this thread because Alley asked about some movie suggestions for her to enjoy with her fella on the weekends. I'm going to start out with two movies that I really enjoyed.
First, Memento:
From Amazon.com ~ Guy Pearce (L.A. Confidential) and Joe Pantoliano (The Matrix) shine in this absolute stunner of a movie. Memento combines a bold, mind-bending script with compelling action and virtuoso performances. Pearce plays Leonard Shelby, hunting down the man who [word censored] and murdered his wife. The problem is that "the incident" that robbed Leonard of his wife also stole his ability to make new memories. Unable to retain a location, a face, or a new clue on his own, Leonard continues his search with the help of notes, Polaroids, and even homemade tattoos for vital information.
Because of his condition, Leonard essentially lives his life in short, present-tense segments, with no clear idea of what's just happened to him. That's where Memento gets really interesting; the story begins at the end, and the movie jumps backward in 10-minute segments. The suspense of the movie lies not in discovering what happens, but in finding out why it happened. Amazingly, the movie achieves edge-of-your-seat excitement even as it moves backward in time, and it keeps the mind hopping as cause and effect are pieced together.
Pearce captures Leonard perfectly, conveying both the tragic romance of his quest and his wry humor in dealing with his condition. He is bolstered by several excellent supporting players, and the movie is all but stolen from him by Pantoliano, who delivers an amazing performance as Teddy, the guy who may or may not be on his side. Memento has an intriguing structure and even meditations on the nature of perception and meaning of life if you go looking for them, but it also functions just as well as a completely absorbing thriller. It's rare to find a movie this exciting with so much intelligence behind it.

When watching Memento you cannot miss a single minute of the film (going to the fridge...bathroom...etc.) if you plan on understanding it. Pause it...when you get back...start it up again. Also, on the DVD there is an easter egg that allows you to watch the film in chronological order.
Second, 25th Hour:
From Combustible Celluloid ~ Director Spike Lee always comes through with interesting, explosive ideas even if they don't always jell. This time he's delivered his best, most cohesive and most passionate film since Do the Right Thing.
Edward Norton gives one of his finest performances as Monty, an accused drug dealer who spends his last 24 hours on the streets of New York City before going to prison for seven years. He settles his affairs with his best friends, a bond trader (Barry Pepper) and a poetry teacher (Philip Seymour Hoffman), as well as his girlfriend (Rosario Dawson) and his father (Brian Cox). Not to mention figuring out who it was who narced on him.
Lee and screenwriter David Benioff weave in post-9/11 elements to give the film an extra level of melancholy, a sense of endings and new beginnings. Extraordinary.

I don't know...I just like this movie...Monty's friends at times cracked me up...Naturale (Rosario Dawson) looking too good...the 9/11 backdrop...the music being played in the club scene took me back as well...like I said...I just liked this movie.
On a side note...bought Hugo Boss Soul, their newest, a month ago...I've received many compliments...if you wear cologne you may want to check it out. _________________ Down South ~ "The AB Nation will be there when you do."

Down South:
I was thinking of the same thing (posting a favorite movie list) so Alley had many to choose from. Although I have given a huge list on the other posts, here are my favorites:
Comedy: Airplane! and Spaceballs (a tie)
Non-Fiction Drama: Braveheart
Fiction Drama: Shawshank Redemption
Sci-Fi: Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi
Romantic Comedy: Shakespeare in Love (Yes, I know I am a guy, but
sometimes gusy get dragged to this stuff and it isn't
always bad.)
Action/Suspense: The X-files Movie
Animated: Batman Mask of the Phantasm and Transformers (tie)
TV Comedy: Coupling (British version)
TV Drama: Alias
TV Sci-Fi: Star Trek Deep Space Nine
As I said before all this (with the exception of Shakespeare in Love, because I completely blanked on it the other day) is in my other post. I hope it helps to get things going though.

I'll post this here too :
There are so many good movies, but one I must recommend is "Das Boot - Director's cut" by Wolfgang Peterson. It was nominated for 6 Oscar.
This is really a GREAT movie, originaly from 1981.
My DVD movie collection is over 70 DVD's + and this is one of the top 5.
If you like sci-fi, "Alien" is the one to watch, from 1979. This is probably one of the best sci-fi movies ever made.
"Where Eagles Dare" 1968 with Clint Eastwood and "Artificial Intelligence" 2001 by Steven Spielberg, last one not in my collection yet.
And ofcourse I have to mention "Top Gun" 1986.
Check out www.imdb.com - The Internet Movie Database, the name says it all.
Hope you find my recommendations and surgestions interesting, Alley _________________ Norwegian fan freezing north of the arctic circle. |
