I took spanish in high school which is pretty much where i learned to read it. I didn't start learning to speak it until i was actively listening to the immigrants we had working the late night janitorial shift at one of my jobs. I got better at it when i started taking it in college where my teachers actually used the language in the classroom.

I hate it when people teach you something, then once your all done they tell you that your never going to use what you learned. Kinda like high school chemistry teachers

I actually am from the States  Born and raised here.
I used to know Latin moderately well. It's hard to know "awesomely" unless you really use it. Still... I could struggle through a lot of latin text and generally get the idea. And, having taken some 4 years of it, my vocabulary is freaking huge. And, even if I don't necessarily know the word, I might recognize its latin root-word, and get a general idea of what the word means.
Same goes for Japanese. I used to know enough to get me in trouble, and generally get me back out of trouble, but I was never really fluent in it. And, it has been forever now since I've used it, let alone read it. I bet, if I sat down with it, I could struggle my way through it...
...actually I funny Japanese story. I was at a military class at Fort Leonard Wood. Myself and Tanaka (who was from Guam) kinda knew Japanese between the both of us. Problem came up when we were asked to meet with representatives of a village. When we got there, the representative spoke fluent Japanese... and Tanaka and I were just... wow were we outclassed. I constantly had to ask her to slow down. It was kinda funny. I guess you had to be there.)) |

I admire anyone who can understand Japanese even if just a little, the language looks hard to learn just by looking at it!
I mean all those line and lines and lines... its just confusing!
Any of these people deserves recognition for even only knowing some of it!

I know the basics of japanese ....i know the table of katakana and hiragana and i know good morning, hello during the day time and good evening . also i know how are you, i am fine and your very welcome also yes and no ....a few other phrases but thats alot to type...most of my learning is formal and i only took two years of it ...i would have taken more but Mr. Komura had to retire ...and i didnt want to learn from a white guy that learned from a book

I tried to learn German back when I was in high school, but my teacher was kind of lousy so I didn't learn much!
I only as a few pronouns and sentence structures, not even enough to ask for simple directions!

Being Danish, I can understand and read some Swedish and Norwegian too, as the languages are similar. I'm better at English than I am at either of those two languages, though. I've also been taught German and Spanish, but it's very little I remember of either language today.
I make a lot of typos. I guess I could use the excuse that English isn't my first language, but the truth is that I do the same thing when writing in Danish. I believe it's because I try to type a bit too quickly, so I end up getting the letters all mixed up. Sometimes I don't even understand how I can possibly misspell a word as badly as I do, since I have once even managed to write my fursona's name as Cosnatce.

this might be weird but I never thought you were danish, I thought you were american since like you say, you speak english very very good

Thank you, though I wouldn't say that my English is very good. It's just better than my Swedish and Norwegian.

you are not alone my mind thinks one spelling and my fingers type another lol 'her' becomes 'erh' and so on my fingers have dyslexia

you know Caroline you are funny ...stop beating yourself up because it doesn't look right written ....its hard to get the tone and inflection of your voice across through text but that dosen't mean your jokes don't bring a chuckle
