I was under the impression that Grog was simply rum cut with water or weak beer. At least, in it's traditional form as it was known in the English Royal Navy. |
Not so! I was once even served rum with sweet tea (like, really sweet. I live in that special region of the South where what normal people call 'runny syrup' we call tea), and the barman called it grog. |

At first I was wondering if this was talking about "would alcohol be in Bon Bon," and I had to laugh that someone might think otherwise.
You can't call Bon Bon a place of "wine, women, and song," without having the wine my silly little tail waggers. I'll fancy the wine or the hard stuff. Beer is for men and lumberjacks. Chocolate Liquor or "fairy wine" as some of my friends and I refer to it. I'll drink to an extent, as I have to maintain some kind of control, but I'll be leaning over that line.

Heh, I'm afraid you're a bit too new for me and I know not enough of you to give you an appropriate answer. I'm more for having a body shot be taken off me. I don't think I've come across what you are yet either.

Ah ha, finally a topic about which I actually know something.  Now before I switch over to lecture mode, please bear in mind that the sense of taste is highly subjective. Some people simply do not like beer, regardless of which kind. Some have more rarified tastes and some prefer whatever is the lease expensive. But regarless of what you prefer, enjoy it.

Mystic's statement is an all too common opinion held by many people who's only experience with beer is with the mass-market macrobrew "NASCAR" varieties available in any drinking establishment. While I won't name any names (just watch any football game to get inundated with the ads), the only resonable use for such swill (in my opinion, but I'm biased) is hosing down the sidewalk after HoboCon 2010 and then only because it would otherwise be a waste of perfectly good water. The modern concept of American beer is a descendant from the Great Depression when many people could not afford to brew or purchase beer of the standards of yesteryears. To save money the quality of the beers available was lowered to meet what people could afford to pay. Sadly that tradition has lived on and become so prevelant that too many people don't realize the immense variety of beers available. From the deep, rich, chocolate porters to the clear, crisp honey pilsners. From the hoppy, bitter bite of IPAs to the cloudy, matly sweetness of weissbiers. And that's just scratching the surface. Now before I get too carried away, let me say this: If you don;t like beer because you had some Milwaukee's "Beast" at a party in high school and it tasted like warm piss, then do yourself a favor and try a real beer sometime. If you still don't like it, then at least you'll know the difference.

like a good brew his little speech about beer has aged to perfection till it could be poured into the mouths of knowledge seekers everywhere
speaking of which could you recommend any such good brews as like so many of us average joes i too have never gone beyond the general macrobrew regime due to its lack of availability (or my lack of searching most likely)
and while we are at it do you know of a good rum as the only one i have tired is bundaberg rum which frankly is probably the lowest quality rum there is

Xebulon, I couldn't agree more.
Throughout high school, and even now in college, most of what is available is *ahem* LOW grade beers. So having had only those unsaid beers. I figured that beer wasn't my thing, and I'm better sticking to hard alcohol. Boy was I wrong. Over the summer my buddy introduced me to Pilsner Urquell. Now maybe it was the fact that I had just been a pardon the phrase, ditch bitch for the past 11 hours in 100 degree weather, but whoa, it was good. So I've come to the opinion that I like the higher end range of beers.

Don't forget the lemon juice, have to fight off the scurvy.
While I like Whiskey, I love beer. Give me a well poured Black and Tan and I'm a happy man. I love microbrews. I like going to new grocery or liquor stores to see if they have something I haven't tried yet. I just recently learned that there are a bunch of different beers with the name "Kilt Lifter", know I need to find out which one I had in Tucson.

I'd be only too happy, Relentless. As to the rum, I just use either Captain Morgan or Sailor Jerry.
Now these first few are my particular favorites. While they each do have certain beers that I prefer I will happily drink anything they make.

For beer, I'm a fan of Arrogant Bastard ale, and Big Hoppy Monster. It depends on the situation, though, because the two beers aren't really that similar. |

My friends are fans of Fat Tire, Hardcore, and Woodchuck.
Myself, I'm not much of a drinker, but prefer hard stuff. If I'm looking to get tipsy and lose a few inhibitions, I'm not looking to babysit a few beers to get the job done. I'm gonna down something quick and get to what I was aiming at. 
I can taste the alcohol in anything, no matter how fruity you try to disclose it. Guess I was a King's food taster in another life. But my tongue is quite sensitive to such tastes.

...I know that Michelob, Budweiser, Busch, etc are considered amongst the top in crappy beers... but don't those breweries make something that is good? I mean, isn't Shock Top by like Anheiser-Busch or something? So, my question is, while the main-line of those brew makers is total and utter blech, don't they have some mini-brews or whatnot that are good?)) |

| I know that Michelob offers a porter. It's not quite the same as the A. Strange Stout my wife and I prefer, but the stout is a brewed in house at our favorite restaurant, and so not something we can just take home. Closest tasting we can find locally, and I've come to accept it as the closest substitute we can get. The stout itself is an opaque beer with subtle chocolate and coffee tones and just a rich, full-bodied taste. Since I have essentially no tolerance, I'm pretty tipsy after 2 and near passed out for the evening when I managed a third. |

Sounds to me an awful lot like one of the brewing companies from my neck of the woods: Atlantic Brewing Company. Now, granted, most people would make fun of an ale from Maine that was flavored with blueberries, but I tell you, I'd like to see anyone come out with me on my lobster boat like myself and a couple of my friends one day back when I was young and stupid, down about three of those in a half hour and be able to stay on the boat.
