I never answered this myself, as I hadn't settled on a final character I'd like at the time, but now that I have, I'll add my reason here.

I based Constance on what I'd like to see Vanessa make. I am fascinated by equine characters, mares to be specific, though I think that they are often drawn in a way that I don't particularly like. Often they look too realistic or rough, but Vanessa's style is perfect for how I'd like my character to be drawn.
Vixens are usually my favorites along with dogs, and I also very much like bunnies and felines, but those are so common. I felt that a mare would be perfect, because of Vanessa's style and because there haven't been any mares in the comic yet, at least not any that I noticed. I'm also not good at coming up with really unusual species, so it really had to be something pretty simple.

So that's really what I based my character on. The occupation came after a while, as I thought that it was suitable, and that it would fit in nicely with the rest of Bon Bon. Fitting in with the characters and the nature of the comic was important to me.

For a name I googled for lists of common names in the victorian era, and I've always found Constance interesting so when I found it on such a list, I just settled on that. I thought that it was pretty suitable for the kind of elegant lady I was planning, though I think the name has sort of a hard edge to it. So I picked Mayflower as a last name, as it sounds "softer" and would then fit with her gentle side.

I needed a long time till I was done with my final fursona. Since I made my first very own character that got floppy catears many years ago I thought to use this at my fursona too. The hard thing was to make her fit my personality.

The way I chose mine 1) I like wolves, 2) I'm a military history nut so I made him an former calveryman, and 3) being in the military myself, it just made sence for me to have him drawn in this way.
