Too expensive, imho. Besides, I already have Xenonauts. _________________

X-com in 1994 was the best game ever! Well its a toss up between that and the starcontrol series. _________________ "Every exit is an entrance somewhere else." -Tom Stoppard

I haven't played X-Com, so I'm not about to say anything is better than it. But I understand that Xenonauts is basely the same idea as X-Com, in fact, inspired by X-Com.
I have no doubts that X-Com is probably a great game, but as I already have Xenonauts to play (and quite enjoy it when I actually remember to play it), and the new X-Com is some $60 compared to Xenonauts' substantially less $30 (for the Premium Alpha version), I think I'll stick to Xenonauts.
Just my 2 cents. _________________

It looks like a fairly decent game. I've never heard of any of these games till recently, but I may get it after its official release and get more feedback on it. _________________

I tried out the demo. It was ok. Though there seems to be rather mixed results on the Steam forum. _________________

Demo was way too short. Wish it was longer.
The press demos I've seen on YouTube were fantastic.
Press people gets more than we do. Lucky bastards. _________________ "Every exit is an entrance somewhere else." -Tom Stoppard

Isn't that how it always happens? The public gets the short end of the stick, unless you catch it at one of the big conventions. Oh well, it looks to be promising nonetheless. _________________ My fursona: Tariel Uhara

I think the main problem is that a lot of the old fans are bitching because it has been "dumbed down" for the modern generation. I've seen a lot of people on the Steam forum complaining that "it's not X-Com". Thing is, that's right. It's not X-Com. Didn't the developers say they were intending this to be a game of its own?
I'm well aware that demos only ever show a mere fraction of a game's potential, usually, and it looks to be a good game. However, as I said before, I think that the price is stretching it a bit, expecially when Xenonaunts is going for a 3rd of X-Com: EU's asking price. While Xenonaunts may not be quite as flashy as EU, it still has excellent gameplay and massive potential because it's still only in alpha.
I will get X-Com: Enemy Unknown... but not until it's on sale for at least 50% off.
Just my thoughts. _________________

((Hey Silvador,
X-Com has a setting for whiney, older, players on the posting forum saying that the new game is too easy. It's called "Classic". "Classic" is pretty much a brutal setting, as the original game.
Anyway, when you do get X-Com, I think you'd enjoy it. It has a solid amount of replayability. It can be challenging... to the point of frustrating. And it does have that bit of dark-twisted ness you seem to enjoy. )) |

You arrogant, patronising, controlling little...
Just where the fuck do you get off? How dare you come in here with that superiority complex of yours and imply that I was whining about ANYTHING?! You think you know everything, that you are in charge. It's in your words, the way you speak. You spit what you say as though you're a snake spitting venom at a rodent.
"Hey Silvador, X-Com has a setting for whiney, older, players"
By addressing me directly, before your insulting comment, you are directing said comment at me, thereby insulting me and implying that I am one of your "whiney, older players". Now, quite frankly, I normally wouldn't care, but this implication tells me that not only are you outright rude, but you basely overlooked my post made right in front of your own, a considerable time ago. The simple fact that my post has been there for... over 2 months means that you have no excuse for having not read it. This means either you blatantly ignored it entirely, or read it and simply fobbed off everything that was said, only picking out what you could use for the purposes of insulting me directly. I clearly stated that it was other people whining about the game. At no time did I include myself among the group which I had spoken of. At no time did I express that my opnions of the game were shared with those whom have been whining. Yet you imply that I am the one whining.
You then go on to state that "you think I'd enjoy it". Aside from the fact that I had already stated, in the post I just mentioned, that I think the game looks good and intend to buy it, you know nothing about me. You've made no attempt to get to know me. In fact, almost every word you have ever spoken to me has been down at me.
First you insult me, and then think that you know me. Your words simply reek patronising. This statement once again shouts to me that you either completely ignored my post and assumed what was in it or conveniently selected what you felt you could use to talk down to me once more.
I'm well aware of the differences between the old X-Com and the new X-Com. I honestly don't care. I've played the demo. I loved the demo. As stated before, I already PLAN to get X-Com. My only beef with the game is that it is $70. I refuse to pay for a $70 game when there is another that is nearly identical for a 3rd of that price. DO NOT confuse my financial decisions and personal opinion of the matter with "whining about how the old X-Com was better"! _________________

This was what you posted on your post 5 October. My comment about "Whiney" gamers was based on your comment, where I inferred that you were kabitzing about forum posters who complained that the new X-Com wasn't their beloved old X-Com. I was not commenting about you at all.
Another way to put it, I was agreeing with you. Light forbid I ever decide to agree with you.
And, as to the rest of your post, you've spat nothing be vitriol and bile at me since you started. So... me and my eliest attitude are pretty much just going to let you throw your temper tantrum, and shrug while saying, "Meh".
"Meh". )) |

If you were in fact agreeing with me, then why not just say so? Why feel the need to inform me directly, in that insulting manner, of something that only pertains to those whom the insult was supposedly about?
As for my... tone towards you, you have yet to give me a reason to respond any nicer. Look back, Caroline, you will see that every time I speak against you in such a way, it is only ever preceded by your patronising and controlling attitude. I respond in kind. Step on my toes and I will damn well stand on yours.
Perhaps you should lose that chip off your shoulder once in a while and realise you are no better than the rest of us. Maybe then we will be able to have a more reasonable discussion. _________________

((Silvador,
I called you out, as you were the one who posted their disappointment about Steam-Forum posters. Hence, I figured, you made the post, I'd let you know I actually agreed with you. The logic made sense to me. If Adept would have posted that comment, I would have addressed the forum post to him.
Now, as to your other thoughts, again, I see we are at an impasse. I feel zero need to change my personality. If I have to deal with your personality, you have to deal with mine.
I will, in an uncharacteristic display of humility, apologize for not making my original post (dated 14 Dec, 12:56pm) more obvious in that I was agreeing with you and your thoughts on Steam-Forum-X-Com posters. )) |

I accept you apology and will in turn apologise for assuming your implication.
For the record, however, I wasn't actually voicing any disappointment in the Steam Forum posters. I was merely stating what I had seen. While I do not share the disappoint many other plays have towards the game's differences, I'm not incapable of seeing their perspective. _________________

((Silvador,
No need to apologize.
All,
Anyway, to me, X-Com: Enemy Unknown and X-Com should be two different games. I understand the appeal of nostalgia, and the desire to bring old stuff back into the forefront... however, more often than not, if someone tries a complete remake of a previously enjoyed game, that game just won't be the same. I would love to see System Shock 2 return, either as a PS3 or PC game; however, I know that it will not. Games have evolved since the days of System Shock 2... and, if nothing else, it would probably never even get out of the legal battle. Something similar is how Hollywood is remaking a lot of old movies again... with mixed results. Some are new, re-imaging of an old movie... while others attempt shot-for-shot remakes that just do not work. And... System Shock 2 was given a reboot, of sorts, in the Bioshock franchise.
Anyway, for a game example, Zelda, the original one for the NES, should never be remade. The game worked for the system it was on, the limitations of that system, and for the time it was produced. If they remade Zelda now exactly as it was back then, it would be pounced on by the community. Shoot, even "retro-throwbacks" like "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" are more just designed as an old game, but severely modernized, as you can buy new moves, the graphics are HD, while still looking retro, you have save points, etc. What Zelda has done, is re-imagined itself. Different, but similar, stories... different, but similar characters, locations, art-styles, story-styles, abilities, music, mood, etc. The next generation of Zelda still has some iconography that links it to the old-Zelda, but they are all unique in their own ways. Same can be said for Super Mario. Each iteration is still Mario... but each is new in it's own way.
Anyway, getting back to X-Com: Enemy Unknown, I'm actually glad that Take 2 Interactive Software made a new game, instead of just trying to completely re-package the old game. I've played/beaten X-Com... I haven't played X-Com: Enemy Unknown. And, it is fun, finding the little X-Com easter-eggs hidden in the game... like the fact the arcade games are all labeled "X-Com", and have the old model of the characters, or that the aliens have all the old, classic, names.
Anyway, for me, X-Com: Enemy Unknown is a well put-together game. It does use a lot of the iconography from the original series; yet, gives the game a solid reboot, making it new, and not just a re-hash. One of the biggest things I like is that you can alter the difficulty mid-game. If it starts being hair-pullingly frustrating, you can downgrade the difficulty... if it seems too easy, you can upgrade the difficulty. And, the difficulty has a lot of effects... random events are increased. The quickness of introducing bigger aliens is faster. Countries are more likely to panic if you don't get your defenses up quick enough. Research and construction times seem to take longer.
So... yeah. Just some quick thoughts from me. )) |
