Hey guys....I'm sorry but with all due respect....the new pope looks very scary to me. He has this dark look in his eyes. He even has a weird not so nice smile.

I don't know....but there's something weird going on with him.

I wonder what you think.

I think he's only for transition (due to his age and for the history)! It's not a surprise for me! Knowing that lot of electors "cardinaux" were nominated recently (he had a lot of influence beyond JP II)! He's known as conservator and very dogmatique! His supporter call him "the great inquisitor"! I've already read some controverse about him (youth during the 2e war) and strange position (about music Confused )!

But let's see if he will make people come back in the church and could give answer to the catholics face to the modern and actual society! Anyway, the charismatic legacy of JP II 'll be difficult to reach !

I think that he'll do a good job. Some folks are trying to drudge up a past that isn't there. I frankly think that the Catholic church needs new blood in the leadership role.

Alley, you have really disappointed me this time. I feel really bad about this. I can't believe you, who I've held in such high esteem for so many years, could be so judgemental based solely on someone's looks. He's an old man - 78 years old! What do you expect him to look as good as you? We hardly know anything about him yet, but from what I've heard on the news from people who know him he's a nice, humble and kind of shy person. Let's be fair and give the man a chance before judging him, and only on his performance, not his looks. That's just plain WRONG!

easy there Supermark

you have to admit that the new Pope looks a little like Frankenstein

I'm a Catholic and I'll have to say that he's not the only priest who looks
like he crawled out of a coffin.

We've got plenty that look like that.

1) There are also a lot of non-priests that look like that, what's it matter?
2) I really could care less if people think the pope is the ugliest person alive or the best looking, but what I do take issue with is people judging him or anyone else for that matter as somehow weird or inferior or making disparaging remarks because of their looks. That's just shallow and mean.

OK, I see where you are going with this.

Judging on looks alone isn't cool.

I think that all goes back to John Paul II. He was a good looking guy.
A lot of women/girls thought he was cute. He also was an extremely
spiritual guy. People gravitated to him.

But then you get a new guy, who looks Frankenstein, and people freak out a little bit. I'm sure that people will warm up to him in due time, once they get to know him.

Actually, I think that he kinda looks like Frankenberry. Whatever happened to Count Chocula and Boo Berry?

Anyway, I think they'll be looking for another pope in another six or seven years. Hopefully, the Cardinals will choose someone a lot younger. What the world really needs is a black pope and a black President! In my opinion, anyway. LOL Tongue

My opinion:

1. Of course nobody should judge another person just by his looks. And surely a 78 year old does not look like a 20 year old. But I also think that this is not, what Alley was talking about. As I understood her, she was talking about a feeling, his charisma evokes to her. I guess, she meant one of these "female intuition" things...

2. I agree to everybody, who is sceptical. This man is highly dogmatique and conservative, which has brought him into discussion over here in Germany very very often within the past years. I am not Catholic (any more), but I am very interested in church and everything that refers to it. This man comes from another century, that´s for sure!

3. In his youth, he has even been known as a reformer! This opinion only changed within the past years. I don´t know, what happened there. I just know, that I truly don´t know, ehat to expect next. Besides, he´s known to be very intelligent. IQ something over 140. He has been an honoured professor in my hometown, many years ago. I do not really think that he´s crazy or something. I believe he does exapctly know what he´s doing. Only that WE still don´t know...

4. He was one of the closest ones to John Paul II. Despite the fact that he is even more conservative than John Paul II. has been, I don´t believe, he will differ that much from his politics. He honestly appreciated him, and he will keep his way, I guess. Somehow.

5. Just came to my mind. A story from some years ago: He banned a priest from the Catholic church, because he celebrated a fair together with Protestants...
That is surely an attitude you cannot afford as a man with the influence of the Pope!

I highly doubt that story is true, not only because it doesn't seem logical, but also because that would be contrary to Catholic beliefs that Catholics and Protestants are like brothers and sisters and he himself would have probably gotten in trouble with the Vatican for dismissing the priest without good reason, and finally because I just read that he said today that one of his primary goals for his papacy is to continue John Paul II's efforts to unite all Christians. If the story mentioned is true, then there has to be more to it. Excommunication only happens under the gravest of circumstances.

Sorry, I haven't read every word on this topic, so I probably shouldn't even post.

I've read in the newspaper today that he was in the army during WWII (joined in 1943), but deserted in 1945. He became a priest etc after the war, but I still think this leaves some kind of mark on him. Just to let you know, I already have seen the first photoshopped picture on the internet, the pop with Hitler hair style and mustache.

Alley,

I also worry about this one. He has recanted, but are you aware he was a member of Hitler's youth league? Yeah, he was a kid and he probably didn't have a choice, but when you're young, the stuff you're taught tends to stick - even if it is just a little bit. As strict as this guy is on Catholic beliefs, it is a little bothersome. Having said that though, I am going to wait and see how he handles world issues before making final judgement.

To LosihoTTT: It amazes me (someone who happens to be protestant and VERY anti-Catholic dogma) someone, even an athiest, can believe the leader of over 1 billion people world-wide is irrelevant. That's like saying Hu Jintao, President of China, is irrelevant because your not Chinese. The Vatican may not have a military, but they have a more powerful weapon: faith.

Finally, to supermark: Do you expect us to believe you have never judged or treated someone differently because of their looks? Being a non-ideal version of a human being, I have had many, many cases where good people have told me they want to find a nice person like me to date and when I show interest they back away. Later I find out that they had issues with my physical appearance - that was why they didn't want to date me. Even with my problems, I have done this. You can tell a lot by someones looks and make a judgement, but as long as you're willing to get to know them, there is still nothing wrong with the judgement.

I probably have offended some people, but this is how I feel. i do not want to offend people, but I think adjusting my feelings to be politically correct if even more offensive. I seriously hope everyone takes this just as my opinion because I do respect and enjoy reading all of yours.

sincerely,
troyholc

Come on Supermark, get real. Everybody judges everyone all the time. By judges, I mean forms an opinion based on prior experiences and aquired knowledge. Forming opinions is basic human nature.

If you see some huge ugly mean looking dude coming down the street towards you, and a beautiful exotic smiling women, do you have the same opinion of them because you never met them, or got to know them? I beleive you wouldn't but that is not for me to judge, even though I just did, because I really haven't got to know you.

Alley is not advocating in her statement that she or someone else take action with her opinion. She is wondering if her "judgement" is in line with what others might think. She will then use that information to modify to some degree her feelings towards the pope, and she will learn others things later that will change, or reinforce , her first impression.

Supermark let me ask you this. At what point is it ok to make an opinion on the new pope, tomorrow, next week, next year? How much information is necessary to make a judgement? And if Alley said the pope looked like a really cool guy, would you still be upset?

Don't be upset with Alley for being human. You said yourself that you held her in " such high esteem" . You and I both know that Alley is a wonderful person, and you should be happy that she is comfortable enough with all of us to share her feelings, good and bad.

Alley, if you read this, my impression of the new pope is very similar to yours. He kind of gives me the willies.

Danie

PS Thanks for all your guys support during my trying times Sad

I just want to say that I am truely sorry if I offended anyone with this topic.....especially Supermark. You have to know that it was not my intention AT ALL! I hope you can forgive me. You see...Danie is right...I'm only human...and I do have an opinion and I do make plenty of mistakes. I guess maybe I shouldn't have brought it up?? I guess I just felt like all of you are my buddies....and I was just wondering what you thought about it. I find it fascinating to know what your thoughts are on worldly issues and etc. I love reading the knowledge that other people have about things that I might not.....especially if this knowledge is coming from other countries.

Lately I have been reading and learning more about the Pope and I have formed some opinions but I will keep them to myself...because I feel I still don't know enough.

I have enjoyed everyone's post on this topic and have learned some new things that I didn't know. I thank you for sharing your bit of knowledge with me and I do agree with you on some of the things you've all said.

I think Danielle knows what she's saying especially because she's from Germany.

Thank you to everyone for keeping the peace with this topic and not blowing too many fuses over this..... I look at all this as talk...amongst friends, who might have a difference of opinions but who still love eachother. That's how it should be.

Supermark...you know I love you!! and I'm sorry again.

Sheesh, Alley. You need to stop acting human. Or at least give us some warning before going from sex goddess to mere mortal.

I agree with you on the new Pope. I was just watching the news; doesn't look like a guy who smiled alot. Reminds me of that preacher in Poltergeist. He also looks like my english lit teacher in college (never cracked a smile the whole semester).

And guys. I'm just saying who he reminds me off, nothing about his character.

Alley,

It's a nice reply you put up, but I worry about "freedom of speech" when you have to worry about offending people who might disagree with you. You have your opinion and you made that clear. You also made clear you wanted to know ours. I have asked you questions in which I disagree with your response, but I love it that you even responded. Most well known people would not waste the time to respond. I would love to have something like this with Jennifer Garner or other famous people, but they aren't willing to take the time (even just an hour) to respond to even a couple. You should NEVER have to apologize for your opinion. With me you will never have to. The only time it will become an issue with me is if you started spouting off Hitler/Stalin like opinions. In which case I will just have to stop coming here. But of course, you're to wonderful a person to be that way.

Sincerely,
troyholc

P.S. Thank you, Alley, for being such a wonderful person and allowing all your fans the chance to get to know you.

Hey Alley.

Nice to discuss this with you. I'm from the south part of the Netherlands. Were the majority of people are still Roman Katholic. Are you Roman Katholic? The churchbells started ringing here when the new pope was anounced. I have to agree that the looks of the new pope aren't as friendly as the old one. We'll have to see what happens. I have to say though that it probably has more impact on people of older generation here that were raised strict to tradition. Most younger people here don't really listen to the pope. Tongue

Alley,

It was very nice of you to apologize to me and of course I accept, although believe me when I say I wasn't looking for one and I wasn't trying to make you feel bad. You know, I wasn’t really offended by your comments, just sort of disappointed. I felt really bad that you seemed to be passing some sort of judgment on someone, that "there's something weird going on with him" based only on his looks, without even giving him a chance, and I just never imagined you ever being judgmental like that. In the case of the new pope, the man is nearly 80 years old, he had a stroke a while back, and his looks have faded with age - this is obvious. It will happen to most of us who are lucky enough to make it to that age. As for me, I guess I’m sort of sensitive to this subject. Through the years, I have endured my unfair share of really rude and unfair comments about my own appearance made without ever caring what I was like on the inside, and I know just how bad it made me feel. These days I am much more self-confident, much more comfortable in my own skin. But I always sympathize with and stick up for people who are made fun of for their looks, something they can’t do anything about. You know, you can change your clothes and you can change your hairstyle, you can gain or lose weight, you can work out every day and change the appearance of some parts of your body, but there are some features you can't change just because you want to, and unless you can afford to go to a plastic surgeon and have them somehow altered, they're here to stay.

I guess in some way I had been thinking of you as close to perfect and your comments just didn't fit in with that and it was just disappointing. But of course I realize that we are all human and definitely not perfect, and therefore bound to once in a while pass judgment too quickly. I just hope that you and everyone else for that matter, if you must judge a person, base your judgment more on that person's character and less on first impressions based on physical looks. Anyway Alley, I want to thank you for caring about my feelings and don't worry, there's no hard feelings - you're still my favorite and I love ya lots! Wink

Supermark...I've been thinking about this and you've got it all wrong. I think you just took what I said personally and you shouldn't have. I wasn't saying anything about the pope's looks...(being that he is attractive or not attractive). I have seen tons of old people and when I look at them....I don't think hmmmm....he's cute or hmmmm....she's not attractive...no, I think they are old and that's it. I was only commenting on this "sense" I got from looking into his eyes. THAT'S ALL. I don't know exactly what this sense is.....other than it being different from the last pope.

Again I was commenting on this sense I was getting from looking into his eyes...not his good or bad looks.

Another thing you have to think about is...I get judged ALL THE TIME....way more times then you've probably been judged...good or bad and just because I say what my feelings are concerning this sense I got....I get jumped all over and called names (shallow and ect)? I don't feel that I've judged the pope. Judging is saying that you believe he's this or that. I did not do that.

Anyway...this is how I feel and I hope you can understand this and if not it's okay...as long as we can still be friends. That's all that's important anyway.

Listen Alley, it's ok. I understand what you're trying to say. People can sometimes catch a weird vibe off of someone they don't know and get weirded out. I've had that feeling before too, although not this time. I guess what it all boils down to is this: So long as we can agree that first impressions, whether based on body language or dark eyes or whatever, are not always accurate, and that sometimes people who at first seem weird or creepy turn out to not be weird or creepy after all once you get to know them, then we're on the same page. Alley, my friend, I'm truly honored that you care enough to debate this with me! Smile

Danie, It's just interesting to know what people think who live in other parts of the world and to get different perspectives. These people might see things that I'll never see....they might experience something that I'll never experience.

Alex...I'm not sure what I meant either....it was just a sense I was getting....that's all. Hey...my sense could be completely wrong. That has happend before, I'm sure just like many other people. I just hope he turns out to be a good pope for everyone.

I agree with you on that Supermark. I have met plenty of people whom I first thought were kind of weird...but then they became my best friend. Seriously, that has happend a lot. Anyway, I love a good debate too. It's fun....so long as the respect still remains.

LOVE YA LOTS!

Very Happy

My oh my...

Hello everybody!

As I haven´t been here for some days I am really surprised on this "explosion" of posts.
I just hope it will be possible to share our thoughts in future still. Without having the feeling to hide something. Because someone might not like that certain thought.
I have to agree to everyone who is still waiting and trying to get his own opinion. I guess we all heard many different informations within the past days/ weeks. But I suppose that it is hard to find a well- based point of view on the life of a 78- year- old man, who certainly has experienced a lot of things in that time.
It is for sure that he has made mistakes. Just like all of us. What I am thinking right now is: He may be dogmatique and stuff. But he is still too intelligent NOT to know, how important his job is right now. And besides his personal issues: His main aim is certainly to live for his church. And I guess he knows that it will be hard to be convincing by taking some steps backwards after John Paul II. Sure, he was conservative as well. But nobody doubts that it led his church to a more modern point.
And Benedikt can surely not afford to destroy this work. I think he will surprise us. Maybe sometimes in a negative way, but maybe even positive? I believe he will change some things. And changing allways means pros and cons.
Concerning this Hitler thing: You should have tried to say "no" to Hitler Youth meetings! I talked to many old people over here, who experienced that time. Some of them already died. Some of them are still alive. I don´t want to hide anything: There have been followers of Hitler in my surroundings as well. As everywhere in Germany. But it was honestly not possible NOT to join these groups. At least for pretending to believe in their issues. There was a Hitler Youth league for girls as well. They met at sundays, to make sure that people will be kept from going to church. As the influence of the church on people shoul decrease. If you wouldn´t go to the meetings and stay at home or go to church instead, the police would just come to your place and take you away!
I do not know, how the new Pope´s opinions on Hitler have been during the war. Therefore I don´t want to assume anything. But one thing should be sure: As long as nobody can proove to me, that he was a follower in beliefs, I will not judge him in a negative way, just because he did not stand up and say "no". Which meant being tortured in many cases.
I have to be honest: If I had lived during the war, I do not believe I would have been in the resistence movement. I would have shut up like everybody else, sadly...

Hey Dannie!

You're a sweet person. I don't dislike German people. What happened happened as they say. It's best to go on and try to make the world better. It's best for yourself to have a good feeling with what you have done with your life! Hope you'll have a good career as a model! Cool

To Alley: Hey have you ever been to Europe!? If you haven't I'm sure you would have fun looking around. Hope you don't forget about our little country. If you are ever going to visit the Netherlands please let me know I would be honored to offer you some of our pretty flowers! Wink

We always give lots to the pope for Easter and the last pope always mentioned it in his speach..(Just to stick to the subject Wink )

Dannie,

First, please forgive my German if I wrote it wrong. Es ist viele Jahre gewesen.

Second, I completely agree with what you said about the Hitler youth issue (as I said in an earlier post). However, I do still worry that, at the very least subconciously, he may still have some Hitler like views that when put in the right situation, they may come out. A less serious example is myself. My parents raised me in one of the strictest protestant religions, and only now, 11 years out of my secluded world, am I starting to feel more comfortable just repeating what someone says to me when they curse. Do I still believe there is any difference between the words considered "curse words" and their more accepted alternatives: no. Can I use "curse words" myself (i.e. not repeating what someone else said) as opposed to their more acceptable alternatives: not really because of the "programming" of my childhood. Eventually I might get there, but I feel it will always be something difficult for me. In my parents religion, if I were caught even looking at Alley's mostly clothed pictures, I would be "burned at the stake" (figuratively, not in reality). So I feel the could be something linguring there even if it was not by choice, as it was not by choice for me to the curch my parents wanted. But as I said in a previous post, I am willing to give this pope a chance.

Third, the reason I think this is a big issue, at least in the US, is we haven't had to deal with a government like that yet. We think that if people didn't want to live that way they would just revolt; that their lives are worth risking for their freedom. It is just impossible for most Americans to understand people living in fear of their government. Those that live here in fear of our government are called insane or mentally unstable.

Again these are just my opinions and please don't take offense. And before anyone post something saying I compared the thiird reich to a protestant religion - I did no such thing. Reread what I wrote - I was comparing the way in which the strict dogmatic teachings to children of powerful groups affect these children when they become adults.

I would love to see any responses - especially from Alley and Dannie.

sincerely,
troyholc

Wow what a great topic! First off, I just want to say I love the fact that such a serious topic can be discussed without things getting out of hand.

I really don't have an opinion on the Pope Benedict himself; i'm not Catholic. I have always thought it strange though that one man essentially holds so much power over so many people. I've also always found it even stranger that that one man would be associated with the church. I myself am Baptist and I cannot imagine one particular preacher/minister being in charge of every Baptist church in the world. I know that's not exactly the way the Catholic church is set up, but it's the best way I can understand and explain it. If someone could tell me exactly what the Pope does maybe it'd help my image of the entire thing. Either way, because I'm not Catholic, I don't really see the Pope affecting me much and therefore I dont' have an opinion on him. I do hope he turns out to be good simply because of the sway he has over people.

As for Germany, I lived there for 8 years and I must say it's a delightful country. I would LOVE to go back and experience it as an adult. (I was there from 3rd through 10th grade) I love the architecture of Europe in general, and I found the majority of German food to be very good. They make the BEST BREAD IN THE WORLD!!!!! I did run into my fair share of people who resented me because I was American and black, but it in no way diminshed my time there. Also, it's been nearly 10 years since I lived there. I'm sure things are different now.

Hey, I also just noticed that this is my 69TH POST!!!! I know it seems kinda inappropriate to bring up this reference in this thread, but I couldn't pass up this opportunity. The 69 is the shizzle!!! Tongue
